Daraga Church - Our Lady of the Gate, Daraga

4.3
#3 of 13 in Historic Sites in Bicol Region
Observe the ornate Churrigueresque architecture of Daraga Church - Our Lady of the Gate, an 18th-century structure declared a National Cultural Treasure in 2007. Built by the Franciscans in 1772, the church is also known as "Our Lady of the Gate Parish Church" and overlooks the picturesque conical shape of Mayon Volcano. You'll observe a well-regarded example of Baroque-style craftsmanship, regarded as unique on the island. Admire the church's facade and walls made from volcanic rock, which is found in abundance in the area. • The church was wonderful :) It is an ancient church and it felt like Philippine history again. Thankful to have visited the church and if you are lucky, you could see the Mayon Volcano from afar.  more »

  • One of the best days to get that blue sky photo with Daraga Church on the foreground and Mayon Volcano on the background fall during weekdays during late February up to early summer. Of course, great light and blue skies is a combination that can never be guaranteed all the time, but the presence of people (if you want something peaceful and quiet) often decrease outside of weekends. As always, bring your own water.
  • What I love about traveling across provinces in the Philippines is that every point is easily reachable with public transporation. It is a 10-minute tricycle ride from 1st Colonial uphill General Luna road. They implement fixed fare and it only costs Php 40 from the Hi-way. Upon arriving at the foot of the Church, the breathtaking view of Mt. Mayon is on the east. The picturesque sight of Mayon Volcano never fail to draw amazement while facade of Parish is carved with intrinsic details. The pure white Church looks more beautiful as it is surrounded with clear blue skies. It is written in the entrance that the Our Lady of the Gate Parish (La Nuestra Señora de Porterìa) is historically built in 1773 with Volcanic Rocks. This hispanic baroque architechture was then restored and the interiors is re-designed with modern style. This is the same Church where “KathNiel” shot one scene in the local film “She’s Dating The Gangster”. There are stores across the Chuch and tricycles readily available to move you around the city.
  • This historic Spanish-era church gives you a stunning picturesque view of Mt. Mayon. It is also a perfect place to visit during your pilgrimages in the town of Albay.
  • If you want some peace of mind and at the same time enjoy the picturesque city of Albay, Daraga Church is spot on the right place for you.. Find some serene time and appreciate the beauty of Mayon Volcano after your one on one talk with God. 😉
  • If you are avoiding the tourist crowd, yet you would like to view Mayon Volcano with a church on the foreground, the Church of La Nuestra Señora de Portería is the place to be. It sits on top of a hill in Daraga, accessible through public transport. It is here that you can have an unobstructed view of the volcano on good days. Aside from the volvano, the church is also a National Cultural Treasure, since it brings outstanding value of Filipino architecture during the Spanish colonial era.
