Huaca del Sol y la Luna, Trujillo

4.6
Take a tour of not only pre-Columbian, but also pre-Incan history at Huaca del Sol y la Luna. Built by the Moche culture, which flourished between the 2nd and 8th century CE, these two huacas (often translated as pyramids), had outstanding ceremonial and religious importance. Many scientists believe that the larger of two was the largest man-made structure in South America before the arrival of the Europeans. Today, the smaller remains better preserved, exposed less to looting and the elements. Complete your visit to the huacas by stopping at the adjacent museum, which displays a collection of historical artifacts--here you can learn the traditional Moche painting techniques. • For lovers of culture and archaeology the Huaca of the Moon is a must-see during your visit to Trujillo. Belonging to the culture Moche (100 BC to 700 ad, before the incas) shows impressive polychrome reliefs in their decorative murals at different levels of the pyramid. It has a Museum site, area of crafts and guides for the visit.

  • The museum was great. The site had great guide and they explained everything well. Very well maintained.  more »
  • No doubt it's a tour to be made, preferably guided. The Huaca of the Sun has not yet been exploited internally and can be seen only from the outside from the Huaca of the moon. This is open to visitors and contains many reliefs and polychrome walls awesomely beautiful

  • It is located opposite the Huaca of the moon but still does not allow admission since there is no investigation by archaeologists. A panoramic view can only be done from the top of the Huaca de la Luna.

Where to stay in Trujillo

Trujillo offers surprisingly few sleeping options for a city of its size, featuring only a few mid-range hotels suitable for the majority of visitors. If all you need is a decent bed in a quiet part of town, look for hostels catering to budget travelers. Visitors who don't need to stay in Trujillo itself can also consider the nearby beach town of Huanchaco, which offers more choices at a range of prices.
