Choquequirao, Sacred Valley

(4.9/5 based on 220+ reviews on the web)
Visit the Incan site of Choquequirao, a terraced structure similar in architecture to the famed Machu Picchu. Hike through peaceful valleys filled with large agave plants and interesting wildlife, learn about the Incan culture and history, and observe the artworks left over by a long-gone civilization. The Incan settlement can only be reached by a 2-4 day trek from Cusco, but you can choose to hike here on your own or on an organized tour with a guide, mules, and a chef. • Due to great reviews on Trip Advisor we booked our trip with Bioandean to Choquequirao and we were not let down. Our guide was Edwin with an our excellent cook Wilber. The hike was the highlight of ou...  more »
  • We (my husband, our son of 18 and I) have migrated with Johselm Canto and his colleague Giovanni to the Choquequirao - four days and many metres of altitude. The reward: on the second day, we were all alone in the ruins of the old mystical Inca city, without mass tourism and with a delicious lunch in Givoannis backpack. Johselm has excellently organized the tour, so that even as two "old" the last altitude have managed with the help of Mulas. A great experience with a great tour guide!

  • I had wanted to visit Machu Picchu for so long (45 years) that I was afraid it would be an anticlimax. So I decided to join a trek to Choquequirao - a place about which I knew only a little. We went w...  more »

  • Choquequirao Trek made our trek the experience of a lifetime. We had an awesome time on this trek. It was NOT easy and I would say it was the toughest trek we have ever done. However the views were awesome and the treking company made the trip, a trip of a lifetime. Apus was well equipped and experienced and we attentive to all our needs. The food was awesome, the tents were in excellent condition and the crew was outstanding. Well done Choquequirao Trek!!
  • We had an excellent time on this trip. We did it as we wanted to do something different from the inca trail which it certainly was. The walk down into the canyon and out the other side was brilliant. It was a great physical challenge and the views were stunning as you descend into the valley.
  • I did a 4 day 3 night trek to Choquequirao with very little hiking experience and not sure what to expect. What I experienced was a fantastic time, with fantastic people, in a spectacularly beautiful part of the world. I went with Bioandean Expeditions, a great company all round who really look after their guests. Our guide, Puma.. was amazing... energetic.. fun... knowledgeable.. and just a super nice guy. Our cook Santiago was like a Peruvian Gordon Ramsay without the swearing, and also utterly nice. Uliel our cowboy let us have lunch in his farm and play with his children. The ruins and countryside are definitely worth seeing but is was journey along the way that was made magical by these people with kind hearts.
  • Just finished an 8 day trek with a buddy and it was incredible across the board!!! Our guide (Angel)was super friendly and upbeat and also extremely knowledgeable about everything from Incan culture and customs to local flora/fauna and folklore! The food was great and our camp was always ready to go when we arrived. The trek itself was difficult but super worth it! After climbing to 4660m i blew out a knee on the way down (luckily it was on the fifth day) and our guide mustered a posse to go hunt down the one van in the area so that I could continue the adventure whilst avoiding the more difficult climbing!! I would highly recommend this tour group!!! (and the choque-machu picchu trek for experienced hikers and/or those who like a very worthwhile challenge)
  • The 9 day/8 night Choquequirao Trek with Choquequirao Trek Company Treks is spectacular. National Geographic lists this trek as one of the 15 most beautiful in the world. It was truly an amazing trip. I will never forget the views from the summit of Parador Abra San Juan pass or the chance to explore Choquequirao all by ourselves; those were truly amazing experiences. The views from the Parador Abra San Juan pass were absolutely breathtaking. I have hiked in many beautiful places in the world and live near and hike in Yosemite and Sequoia Kings Canyon National Parks on a regular basis and I cannot remember seeing anything so incredible as the view from the Parador Abra San Juan Pass. Our guide, Bryan, was really exceptional. His knowledge and love of history was perfect for us and his pacing of the trip was excellent. Bryan made a couple of good calls that made the trek more manageable and in fact, interesting too. The chefs were amazing. The meals were delicious, nutritious, and with a lot of variation. They did so much cooking in such small spaces and what I would consider limited modern kitchen conveniences. The porters were such hard workers and were such a blessing. They made the trek possible for me to complete. Everything about the trek was well planned and exceeded our expectations. I know it isn't too often that someone says "I'd do Choquequirao all over again in a heart beat" (because it is a challenging trek) but I would. It was spectacular and a real accomplishment. Thanks so much for the exceptional experience.
