Catedral de Puno, Puno

3.7
A prominent example of colonial Baroque architecture, Catedral de Puno serves as the seat of the region's Catholic diocese. As you approach the cathedral (c. 1757), admire its imposing exterior, boasting extensive brickwork, a grand entryway, and two relatively squat bell towers. Enter the building to see its altar, featuring numerous intricate religious figures dotting a sizable frame. Note the flag of the Vatican on display to the side--a commemoration of a visit by Pope Paul VI in 1964. Make Catedral de Puno a part of your Puno vacation plans using our Puno trip planner.

  • Close to downtown is conveniently located. From the religious establishments, or is different from closing time day by day. Admission is free, but inside is rustic summer in solemn mood is.

  • For those who will meet the small historic centre of Puno is worth a visit in the Cathedral which is located in the Plaza de Armas. Does not have many works and is quite sober, but I attended a mass at the site and it was great.

  • Beautiful place, huge choir with carved seats.Multiple chapels surrounding the main area. Come to worship the Lord, or tour it as an educational and spiritual place  more »

  • Worth the trip..beautiful place. Very historic. Take a taxi or walk to get here. Just keep a firm grip on your wallet. My friends wallet was snatched out of his backpack while he was wearing it. Fortunately another Peruvian tapped on my shoulder, alerted me, pointed out the guy and I caught him. I'm 6'1" and he was 5' 1" so we discussed him turning it back over to which he replied that he'd found it and promptly handed it back to me. My friend, who was well ahead of me, was oblivious to the theft until I brought him his wallet back. As soon as I let loose of the thief's shirt, he bolted like a rabbit. While my friends passport and other items were in tact he did report that the little guy got away with four dollars. I'm sure he needed it...no loss...just be careful.
  • Nice.
  • Reached here through touristic alley then I saw small Catedral. Weather was extreamly clear, I could see at a time rapidly. I felt instantly this is the cathedral where live togather with locals.
  • Come here for night pictures of the Cathedral. It is not one of the biggest Cathedrals but its one of the nicest buildings in Puno. The lighting is nice at night and the front of the Cathedral has some nice detailed work.
  • I visited at night and truly enjoyed the architecture of this place

Where to stay in Puno

Despite the appeal of Lake Titicaca, most accommodations in Puno sit several minutes back from the water, around the city center. Hostels, budget guesthouses, and rooms in private homes make up the majority of sleeping options, with a handful of boutique hotels also available. Consider staying somewhere with easy access to local transport, as you'll likely want to head off on daytrips to the surrounding area during your Puno holiday.
