Pumamarca Ruins, Ollantaytambo
(4.6/5 based on 150+ reviews on the web)
Visit Pumamarca Ruins to see the remains of a hillside fortress that guarded the entrance to the Sacred Valley. The ruins stand on the site of one of the rare battles that the Spaniards lost to the Incas. Climb a steep slope to get to the massive terraces, which will reward you with panoramic views across the valley to a quarry where the Incas excavated stones. Take a taxi if you wish to avoid the four-hour round-trip trek. Hire a local guide to get a better understanding of the ingenuity of Inca civilization. Wear sturdy footwear and a windproof jacket. • A steep climb, before discovering the ruins that dominate the Valley. They predate the Incas but beautifully crafted. There is a quiet and peaceful atmosphere. At the climax, the day we were there, a shaman captivated his entourage. The return walk to Ollantaytambo is certainly a bit long (for starters anyway) but gorgeous and extremely varied. In short, it's a great time away from the world and noise
