Plaza San Martin, Lima

4.1
#16 of 88 in Sightseeing in Lima
Landmark Tourist Spot
The centerpiece of the World Heritage-listed city center, Plaza San Martin boasts monumental architecture and a central monument erected in honor of national hero Jose de San Martin. Designed to commemorate a century of Peruvian independence, the plaza features nicely presented gardens linking up various monuments with San Martin's central statue. The Baroque look of the surrounding buildings is in keeping with the Neocolonial style of the plaza itself, with grand structures cornering off the public space. Our Lima trip itinerary builder makes visiting Plaza San Martin and other Lima attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Right in the center of Lima, if you have extra time to go to the square, historic buildings and monument. The square is pretty busy during the day, recommend going during the day. the night the place is dangerous.

  • This square is a very interesting place, I was surprised by the architecture of the buildings in the surrounding area and the beautiful elements of the square

  • A few block from the main square is another great square of Lima. If you can stop there.

  • Very nice square indeed, it was our first stop in Lima where we heard the story of the (previously) famous and prestigious hotel there of Simon Bolivar, and the story of the liberator of Peru San Martin. It's safe too as the presence of police in every corner was assuring.
  • Plaza San Martín is a modest town square comprising green areas, paths, statues and a fountain. It has been laid out to discourage passing through it diagonally as a short-cut, with the main entrances being mid-way along the block. It's a pleasant enough space to spend a few minutes, or to eat lunch on a park bench, but it's not really an attraction in itself. The plaza is surrounded by grand old buildings.
  • Truly incredible and grand colonial architecture with beautiful lighting at night. Bustling activity throughout the day. A definite stop for touring lima. Very close to other stunning buildings and the presidential palace. Easy taxi service around the clock. Security is always close but barely noticeable. Safe feeling all day and night. Big your camera.
  • 2nd Important square in Lima downtown, safe place to walk around, but no more than 7pm, these place is the beginning of any demonstrations,so if you see some of them it would be better to keep away
  • Cool place to check out while you're in Lima. Really interesting architecture and plenty of cheap food around. Expect cool lights at dusk!

Where to stay in Lima

One of Peru's most expensive destinations, Lima offers accommodations that range from modern hotel high-rises to family-run guesthouses. Most visitors stay in Barranco, Miraflores, or San Isidro, three of the city's safest and prettiest neighborhoods, which offer a good selection of budget lodgings. For something truly authentic, look for hotels located in restored mansions, many of which offer pleasant rooms overlooking manicured enclosed gardens, ideal for enjoying romantic meals or hosting small private parties.
