  • Located in the Rimac, in the District of San Lazaro (right bank of the Rimac River), at the end of the Alameda de Los Descalzos, it was founded at the end of the 16th century, it keeps the features of a typical convent of recoletos. This convent, as a spiritual retreat house, was founded in 1595 by the Holy brother Fr. Andrés Corso and was his first Guardian San Francisco Solano, where he lived several years. Its construction began in 1616, is one of the convents oldest Lima, called the "Convento de Los Descalzos" by the people because of the Sandals of Franciscan friars used. The prestige of their religious did that in the years of the independence of the Peru stay excluded law of convents that many convents left empty. Since then it was gradually losing its staff, until the start of the second half of the 19th century was given new life, intense and more glorious than the previous, with the founding in 1853, by the missionaries of Ocopa, the Apostolic College of Propaganda FIDE , to concentrated instances Mr. Arzobispo and the more florid Lima society. His brothers fell short expectations which had been pawned in its foundation. Within a few years, said Monsignor Tovar, Archbishop of Lima: "I doubt that in the world there is a convent in where to meet together at the same time a wise as the P. Gual, a Saint as the P. Masiá and a speaker as the P. Cortes, as today are gathered in the of the Barefoot's" Lima. Testimony corroborated with this one, written by the R. P. Gimeno, defining general and visitor of the order in America the year 1900 in a convent book: "I doubt that on this date and in all order has a convent more numerous, more observant, and more apostolic activity that of the Barefoot of Lima. Structure of the convent and Museum: this is the old convent of the Barefoot de Lima, an oasis of retreat and spirituality, science and apostolic action of almost four centuries. Its sober walls of adobe and quincha, its long and silent corridors, its chapels and Church rise towards God, their poor cells, their valuable colonial paintings, wooden ceilings, with their headlights or teatinas windows, its architecture, everything speaks to us of austerity, spiritual life, study, meditation, religious and social projection. It currently retains its old poise and apostolic activity. In its interior there is a valuable treasure of colonial paintings from the Cusqueña and Quiteña schools. You can also see how vivian monks, with its temples, office of pharmacy, nursing, waiver, kitchens and equipment for the manufacture of wines and spirits, printing, etc. Given the antiquity and importance always had this convent, it is natural that over time it would forming an appreciable library. We must not forget that this monastery suffered deletions, as happened with other convents. In colonial times there were the Chair studies of Theology and philosophy, and later was the headquarters of the governing authorities of the Commissioner General of the Franciscans in the Peru. In this convent lived extremely educated and prepared, religious who came to write and publish valuable works. However, their volumes were increasing over time, and in the middle of the 19th century, the library had some 6,000 volumes. Sought name of librarian to a careful and loving religious books. It should be ranked and loose until the first two decades of the 20th century. House of spiritual exercises: in their enclosure is the famous exercises of S. Francisco Solano House, built in 1774 and celebrated by the courses of annual exercises that are practiced by the clergy and the people. Currently, renovated and updated, used for all kinds of events, not giving supply day of the year to meet the demands that are made for use. Social activity: Concerned about the needs of many needy parishioners, they have built a modern medical center, attended from all parts of Lima in demand for free services. It is very well-equipped and staffed by prestigious doctors and nurses. A bench helps to finance some costs. Thousands of poor who flock to the convent on August 2 in the "day of the indulgence of the Porziuncola", to have a full meal is recognized in Lima. There are many other pastoral and social activities.

  • Excellent museum. At first it may seem that it will not offer much, but once started the tour, the amount of information and museum piece is sufficient to justify its price of entry (7 soles). Totally recommended.
