Huaca Pucllana, Lima

4.4
In stark contrast to the skyscrapers and modern infrastructure surrounding it, the steep stones of Huaca Pucllana boast more than 1,000 years of history. The adobe pyramid, standing in what is now the center of Peru's capital, was built by before 700 CE by the pre-Inca people known as the Lima. Constructed from seven rising platforms, the pyramid served as a power base for elite clergymen, from which they controlled the affairs of society. Gaze upon the pyramid and imagine the mystical ceremonies that were conducted in this holy place more than a thousand years ago. • On my second night in Lima, dine in this restaurant with a Peruvian family and my spouse. What is better is the breathtaking view of the pyramid, but then the food which by the way is very expensive, is regular. I ate better in other places where the price was much lower.

  • Easy to reach the archaeological site of Huaca Pucllana has guided tour with very attentive and experienced guides. A must-visit for the file. Has a very cozy restaurant and the night gets even more beautiful with all the lighting in the scene.

  • Too bad that you're no longer visiting the site on your own! A tour guide must be assigned either in Spanish or English. Tour guide is limited in explaining the Archeology of the site, the history of human sacrifices that was found at the site. A little bit disappointed, but overall it's an interesting experience.
  • Really interesting site, the tours leave every half hour and are in either English or Spanish, lasting approx 45min. Entry cost is 12 soles for adults, highly recommended.
  • This site is the first place on my list of "must-sees" in Lima! The juxtaposition of ancient ways in the center of the modern world is fascinating! They have done, and are still doing, a great job of excavating this site. There are other similar areas in Lima, but none are as well-done as Huaca Pucllana. The tours offered in English and in Spanish are good, and I did not have to wait. My guide was very knowledgeable.
  • Worth every minute, with bilingual guides the experience is a trip back in the history of the pre-inka culture in Lima. The Huaca is an artificial pyramid built by ancient ones. It's restaurant is also a we'll know culinary delight. Don't forget to go into the mini museum at the entry. Have seen the Huaca restored over the last 20 years, half way to a full restoration that will take 15 more years you can see archeologists at work, and in summer months there are classes for kids.
  • Interesting place to visit but wasn't very impressed with the tour. However very good value for money and a nice introduction to the history of the area

Where to stay in Lima

One of Peru's most expensive destinations, Lima offers accommodations that range from modern hotel high-rises to family-run guesthouses. Most visitors stay in Barranco, Miraflores, or San Isidro, three of the city's safest and prettiest neighborhoods, which offer a good selection of budget lodgings. For something truly authentic, look for hotels located in restored mansions, many of which offer pleasant rooms overlooking manicured enclosed gardens, ideal for enjoying romantic meals or hosting small private parties.
