Caral, Lima

(4.4/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
The site of an ancient civilization similar to Machu Picchu, Caral has a similar historic significance without the huge tourist crowds. The oldest city on the continent, this ancient settlement was inhabited between approximately 2600 BC and 2000 BCE by over 3,000 inhabitants. Explore the more than 60 hectares (148 acres) of space, once home to the Norte Chico civilization, and learn about their society. A couple of hours from the big city, this makes a great day trip from Lima. If you’re driving yourself, be aware that there are tolls along the way, so be prepared with change. Alternatively, you can go with an organized tour group, which generally includes a guide to teach you more about the history and significance of the site. Put Caral at the forefront of your travel plans using our Lima vacation builder.

  • Caral is a place close to Lima and easily arranged by taking a bus tour from Kennedy Park in Miraflores. It serves as a great opener to the Inca experience prior to going to many other sites such as t...  more »
  • We came with a Collectivo to CARAL. In the town of Supe you can be easily by a Moto-taxi driver to the place of departure of the Collectivos (small buses, public transport) the journey takes about 30 minutes and costs virtually nothing. Arrived in CARAL, one sees a vantage point on a very steep hill. In approximately 10 minutes, one is up and can watch for free across the whole site, sit down, the breeze, enjoy what's blowing and eventually brought food taste. If you would like to see more, can make walking through the sand on the way through the ruins. Entry per person costs 10 soles. On hot days, because there is no shade and mercilessly hits the Sun on the sandy soil may be very tiresome. Drink and sunscreen, maybe an umbrella, are important. You can hire a guide for little money. If you arrive by car will find parking right at the entrance.
