Barranco, Lima

4.5
#2 of 16 in Neighborhoods in Peru
Most cities have a bohemian district, but few are built into a ravine like Barranco, the artistic neighborhood minutes from the center of Lima. Once a holiday spot for Lima's elite, the area was consumed by the urban sprawl and was taken over by artists and bohemians, giving it the easy spirit it enjoys today. Take a walk along the famous Bridge of Sighs, which connects two cliffs, then grab a drink at one of the neighborhood's trendy, colorful bars. Don't miss the neighborhood's beaches, which attract keen surfers from around the world. Use our Lima trip itinerary planning website to arrange your visit to Barranco and other attractions in Lima.

  • We arrived in Barranco by taxi from Miraflores. In about 1 hour you can visit all the main attractions of this corner of Lima that still maintains its own history and its own charm. To see the Church la Ermita, the nearby park with artistic works placed here and there among the trees in bloom and the Plaza Central. Dance the walk under the bridge of sighs that will take you to the ocean. Many street artists who give a relaxed air and summery feel to the place. We then returned to the hotel on foot along the scenic route that runs along the ocean. In about 1 hour walk we returned to Miraflores.

Where to stay in Lima

One of Peru's most expensive destinations, Lima offers accommodations that range from modern hotel high-rises to family-run guesthouses. Most visitors stay in Barranco, Miraflores, or San Isidro, three of the city's safest and prettiest neighborhoods, which offer a good selection of budget lodgings. For something truly authentic, look for hotels located in restored mansions, many of which offer pleasant rooms overlooking manicured enclosed gardens, ideal for enjoying romantic meals or hosting small private parties.
