Tapiche Reserve, Iquitos

4.9
#5 of 12 in Parks in Iquitos
For a truly secluded Amazonian experience, look no further than Tapiche Reserve, a privately owned and operated conservation area accessible only by waterway. Wildlife here includes endangered species such as jaguars, giant armadillo, harpy eagles, and the Brazilian tapir, so you'll spot all kinds of creatures along the trail through lush, thick jungle. The 1,540 hectare (3,805 acre) reserve exists on a strictly no-hunting and conservation-led principle; ticket sales go toward the efforts at preserving this Amazonian paradise. Due to its distance from the nearest town, the attraction doesn't draw crowds--making it the perfect place if you're seeking something remote. • In fact I have no words that explain my experience in the reserve. With my sister, we arrived at Iquitos thinking of taking a tour to the forest, but not everyone, since both are demanding tourists we seek not only a good service but also the opportunity to contribute and contribute something. That tourism is all about. Katoo we met in the hostel Green Track, which we chose for his commitment and ethics after reviewing several other hostels. Katoo never tried to sell us your booking your tour, or even mentioned it (something deeply strange in a city where tour operators chasing you running beside the mototaxi to sell you their tourist package). But after several hours of conversation with Katoo at hostal, walks in the city and more conversation, we decided to bet on a type of tourism committed, consciously and directly contributing to the welfare of wildlife and local communities . And so it was that we chose the Tapiche reserve. What we found was far better than what we think. I think, certainly, that we find good friends both in the reserve and in the hostel, and that the experience we had was just the beginning of an adventure that will last for later. When one is involved, it is difficult to return to everyday life and leave this behind. The commitment having Katoo and his team with the conservation of the environment and animal life you deeply cala. If you're a tourist waiting facilities, this is not for you. If you're a tourist hoping to remain impassive face the problems of the area, nor recommend it. And less if it is your purpose in the jungle is to get a photo with an anaconda or mono. None of this can done in the reserve. This reservation to a day trip from Iquitos, which includes bus to Nauta, boat until Requena, and boat to the reserve. The trip itself itself is already a magnificent adventure, and it is perhaps this remoteness which contributes to make it so special. We did several hours trekking through the jungle, seeing at least 7 types of monkeys, macaws, will, bartender, birds, insects, and more. We ate mushrooms and take water from vines. We saw dolphins at sunset and contribute to the project for the conservation of turtles they have to release 30 tiny taricayas (turtles). We accompany Katoo to converse with other villagers to let hunt animals in its reserve, which meant to visualize a problem that one as tourists do not usually see during a short stay. Again, if you expect to be able to touch a monkey without take charge of the problems that this entails, this isn't for you. In the reserve one sees the animals free. Therefore, nothing could guarantee you see or not some, but that's part of what one should expect in a natural environment. Having seen these same animals in captivity, nothing compares with the pleasure of seeing them jump from tree to tree at dawn, with the freedom that this entails, full and happy. We were lucky to see this in the reserve, because they also are all highly skilled and can read the jungle. Noises that were undetectable, Katoo to Raul for us meant the possibility of seeing a new animal, and therefore learn from him. One of the most wonderful experiences that have this reserve is the observation tower that was built around a tree (was a ceibo?), to no less than 35 meters high. As a person who suffers from vertigo, it is, without a doubt, one of the best experiences I've ever had. Katoo and Raul were filled with patience and helped me up, even the hand and all the time I needed. Be in the cup of the trees, at the same height as the apes, is an unforgettable experience. I prefer much in the pipeline. I fully recommend this to any tourist who wants to pass the comforts and blindness and actually see what the forest and the life in it. I can only thank Verdi, that we cooked and regaloneó, as we say in Chile, incredibly. By far an experience to repeat. Impossible to go there without thinking about volunteering! Many thanks to all!
