Plaza de Armas de Iquitos, Iquitos
Categories: Landmarks, Tourist Spots
Stroll through Plaza de Armas de Iquitos, an attractive urban park and public garden. Relax under the palm trees surrounding the central monument, a tribute to the Peruvians who lost their lives during the Pacific War (1879-83). In the eastern portion of the square, you'll find a fountain with timed jets of water, decorated with colored lights. My first experience in jungle. When we get of the plane, I got immediately ''slap on the face'' with hot and humid air (April 2014). The airport was tiny, you can walk to the plane / airport building. The ride on tricycle to the town center took about 10 minutes but it was convenient, quick and safe. The town was our starting point for the 3 days trip in jungle. On Plaza De Armas you can find lot of agencies offering such trips, we have chosen one recommended in tour guide book - my recommendation is to negotiate price in every possible occasion in Peru as the prices are sometimes too much higher then the real cost of the product / service is. There is manatee protection center in the town, where the professionals are helping to these endangered animals to survive - I recommend to visit it and support them. The food was fresh - mostly fish, chicken and jungle fruits. On Plaza De Armas is a ''iron house'' designed by Eiffel. For transportation you can walk or use tricycles, they are very cheep, but you need to negotiate the price, as sometimes the drivers try to overprice you, especially when they see a tourist. There was very good laundry next to our hostel - cheap and quick service, they even washed my shoes, full of mud. There is nice scenery view from the bank side, we got wet from a sudden rain fall but sipping the drink on a balcony in a bar with view to jungle, was satisfactory. I recommend to visit the market Belen, where you can find really everything. We were advised to go there during the day. Be careful with pickpocketing - do not wear expensive clothes, or jewelery. Try some local food, locals will be keen you have tried. I will do my best to return and visit what I missed first time.
