Catedral de Iquitos, Iquitos

3.5
#6 of 8 in Sightseeing in Iquitos
Church Tourist Spot
Head to Catedral de Iquitos, the main cathedral of Iquitos and an impressive colonial structure. Architect P. Paulino Diaz built the neo gothic building in the year 1924. Declared a national monument of cultural heritage in 1996, the cathedral remains emblematic of the city. The cathedral's publicly accessible grounds house a crypt where the remains of the city's first bishops reside, and the peaceful interior provides shady respite on bustling, hot days. Our Iquitos trip itinerary builder makes visiting Catedral de Iquitos and other Iquitos attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

Where to stay in Iquitos

The scenic, remote city of Iquitos has long been established as a route into the Amazon, so you'll find a good range of accommodations here. Most of the luxury options lie between Calle Samanez Ocampo and the river, with established colonial-era buildings housing some of the most characterful lodgings. Around the town's primarily residential areas, find simple guesthouses on modest-looking side streets, along with rental apartments ideal for longer stays. Scenic lodges and campgrounds on the edge of town give you the feeling of isolation and wilderness that so many come to the Amazon to find.

  • You can see the tower from the plaza, and at night the lights of the tower change colors and at sunset it glows with a warm tone Nice!  more »
  • Nice to see, particularly at night when lights of the tower are on, as they change colors and with the sunset glow it takes a whole different dimension. Simple, humble, but nice to visit inside  more »
