Belen, Iquitos

2.3
#8 of 16 in Neighborhoods in Peru
Visit the wild and eclectic Belen. The vast marketplace is part of the Belen district, also known as the "Venice of Latin America" for its often flooded streets and homes built on stilts. After touring the Itaya River's watery environs by boat, disembark on dry land to take in the gritty culture of the impoverished Belen neighborhood and immerse yourself in the smells and sounds of the lively marketplace. You can find almost everything in the numerous rows of stands expanding over several streets, especially fruits, vegetables and animal products. Purchase locally grown produce, exotic fruit, fresh fish, or colorful spices. Strolling the crowded market you might see controversial animal products, local delicacies, "magic" potions, vibrant clothing, and many other memorable things unavailable anywhere else. • Being located in the zone of flooding of the Amazon River, this traditional neighborhood of wooden houses built on piles of wooden ones and other very large trunks that act as floats, gives you a certain charm as a city floating but very poor , since you can see the cottages to practice only they have the basics, use canoes as means of transport and are basically fishermen and traders. It is a very commercial, bustling and crammed people area. The issue of security is thus minimum must take their precautions

Where to stay in Iquitos

The scenic, remote city of Iquitos has long been established as a route into the Amazon, so you'll find a good range of accommodations here. Most of the luxury options lie between Calle Samanez Ocampo and the river, with established colonial-era buildings housing some of the most characterful lodgings. Around the town's primarily residential areas, find simple guesthouses on modest-looking side streets, along with rental apartments ideal for longer stays. Scenic lodges and campgrounds on the edge of town give you the feeling of isolation and wilderness that so many come to the Amazon to find.
