Lake Churup, Huascaran National Park

4.9
#3 of 24 in Parks in Ancash Region
Hike uphill for around two hours to reach Lake Churup, a scenic body of water in a remote area, surrounded by tall peaks. Less known and frequented than other lakes in the region, the route offers a good option for those wanting to get off the beaten track. Set off on the chalk path, which reaches stepp inclines in places. You'll need to scramble up one portion of the hill, using steel wires wrapped in rubber for support. Once you've reached the deep blue lake, try to frame the perfect photo with the mountains in the background. Wear suitable footwear, bring plenty of water and food, and don't attempt to walk unless you're ready for the uphill scramble section. We stayed at the Lazy Dog Inn, so a short 20 minute cab ride to the trailhead, 10 soles each for admittance. We had our taxi wait for us. The trip start to finish with time for lunch and a bit of expl...  more »

We did this on our second day, therefore, more acclimated. Have a subidona at the beginning (a staircase), after the second sentence is smoother and finally, a last climb. The trail is very beautiful and I did with my children (6 years younger). They got tired but going slowly arrived. The hint is that I don't do on the first day and take it easy to enjoy and get! I was eager to go camping at the foot of the last climb which is an amazing place. If you have time camp there. I went with what private tour assured us arrive on time with the kids.

We went out of the city of Huaraz at 8 am, we put the route in Google Maps and we took 1 hour and average (driving very quiet) reach the starting point in the Huascarán National Park. -Entry costs 10 soles per person - there is a man who explains the route with a map/sign - parking - bathrooms (1 sol per person) the walk starts with a climb type medium strong stone stairs and then gets easier (because being on dirt road). Low a hill and you see a waterfall. The path we took was on the left side of the waterfall, where is "scaled" and walks (the Scheldt is everywhere and with the help of ropes). Walking a little more and then get to the lagoon. All this we took 2 hours (slow and steady step). The descent is possible to do it in less than an hour and a half. I recommend to bring food, water and possible have the hands free to be able to scale.
