Hike uphill for around two hours to reach Laguna Churup, a scenic body of water in a remote area, surrounded by tall peaks. Less known and frequented than other lakes in the region, the route offers a good option for those wanting to get off the beaten track. Set off on the chalk path, which reaches stepp inclines in places. You'll need to scramble up one portion of the hill, using steel wires wrapped in rubber for support. Once you've reached the deep blue lake, try to frame the perfect photo with the mountains in the background. Wear suitable footwear, bring plenty of water and food, and don't attempt to walk unless you're ready for the uphill scramble section. Plan your visit to Laguna Churup and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Huascaran National Park travel site.
Laguna Churup reviews
A quick and entertaining 45 minute drive from Huaraz. This was my first solo hike of my time in Peru and thus made me slightly intimidated as other travel blogs said that the trail was quite... more »
I was told that the hike to Laguna 69 was "a route of sweat", but I ensure you that the hike to churup was much harder. The hike was all the way up, which I mean REALLY walking up the mountain for 2.... more »
This is an excellent acclimatization hike just outside of Huaraz, Peru. The laguna is a beautiful destination and a bit of a challenge. It is a steep hike and the laguna is at 4,450m. Well worth... more »
Beautiful lake, but be prepared for steep way. You have to make 700m up in 5km. It was quite difficult, because of altitude. We got some headache and earache. Drink a lot of water and enjoy breathtaking views.
Very expensive (30 Soles) for a 1.5 hrs trek compared to the salary of a peruvian. Nobody takes care if you found your way out of the national park. Somebody just fills his pockets and doesent care if the people are alright.
The colectivo to Pitec charges 10 soles but during low season it not easy to get there by public transport, try to get the 8am one. Entrance to the National Park is 30 soles for foreign visitors. The landscape is really worth it from the very moment you leave Huaraz and only gets better the higher you get. The laguna is at 4,500 metres altitude so try to acclimatise before doing this trek. At some point the path reaches a fork. We took the "Optional" longer and easier path to the laguna which takes you to the viewpoint where you can enjoy amazing views over the laguna and the glacier. It can be foggy and rainy but with some patience you'll be able to see the cristal clear water of the lake. We chose the shorter way to come back which takes you down steep slopes /cliffs alongside the waterfall with the help of ropes. Very exciting but I wouldn't want to try it both ways!
Difficult trek if you are not used to high altitude, air is thin and ascension is intense, be aware of what you are getting yourself into!
A beautiful lake, not as crowded as Laguna 69. One of first acclimatation hike you should do if you plan to do some walk/trek in the area. There is a more technical part involving ropes on big rocks if you go to the route near the waterfall. You can avoid this part by following a path going up on your left when it forks. This way you'll also arrive slightly above the lake and will get the best views. Possible to continue past the last to a small secondary one, but you can skip it if you are short on time. I have to remove one star because taking 30 soles for every single tourist going there is just a shame, especially when the offer of multiple-days ticket is really poor or uninteresting.
