Huanchaco Beach, Huanchaco

(500+ reviews on the web)
Beach Nature / Park
With its long, low waves and excellent surfing conditions, Huanchaco Beach attracts mostly surfers and beginners learning to surf. The beach boasts many surf schools, cafes, and beach vendors selling fast food and souvenirs. Stalls offering fishing tackle line a long wooden pier protruding into the sea. All over the sand you'll notice typical Andean "totora horses"--boats made of reed--standing upright. Streets and parks nearby have plenty of restaurants serving up excellent seafood. Rent some deck chairs and umbrellas (the sun is fierce) and watch the surfers. With constant waves and chilly water, the beach does not lend itself much to swimming, but if you still want to take a dip, be careful not to step on a sea urchin. • Beach is small with plenty of waves for surfing. We were there in late May and the water was cold and the surfers and fishermen all had wet suits on. One can rent a reed boat at the shore.  more »
  • Water is really nice to swim in and great for surfing obviously. We were beginners so better to try surfing first at the right hand side of the pier where waves are smaller.  more »
  • Having lived in Huanchaco for over 9 months you may have thought the magic would wear off, but any time slipping on my flip-flops or wetsuit to head down to the sea always brought a smile to my face. ...  more »
