Salinas de Maras, Cusco

(5,500+ reviews on the web)
Geologic Formation
Used since before the Incan period, Salinas de Maras represents a patchwork of shallow geometric salt pools that cascade down the slopes of a canyon. These saltpans--still harvested by the local people using traditional methods--are feed by a natural spring. Geologists believe that salt-water spring originates from the halite deposits left from the ocean that covered the area some 110 million years ago. The salt owes its soft pink hue to the traces of various minerals, such as potassium, magnesium, calcium, and silicon. Put Salinas de Maras into our Cusco vacation planner and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • We took a private tour here last year and it was definitely a spectacular sight to see. There are thousands of salt evaporation pooks nestled into the mountainside. I would highly recommend visiting!  more »
  • Worth the visit. The salt pans are a very unusual place, and make sure you have a good guide, for he explains about the history of the site and how does the extraction of salt.
