Puka Pukara, Cusco

3.9
#14 of 45 in Sightseeing in Cusco
Ruin Tourist Spot
An interesting and atmospheric historical site, Puka Pukara represents a set of Incan military ruins. Still a source of debate, the purpose of the fort was at least partially militarily minded, though an abundance of other features--including baths and plazas--point to the possibility the site contained more than just barracks and weapon stores. Admire the views of the surrounding forest from what is a well-positioned local vantage point, and admire the coloration of the rocks (the name translates as "Red Fortress") used for the walls of the main buildings. Put Puka Pukara into our Cusco trip builder and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • Another of the many places to see in the wonderful Cuzco! It is a small place and does not take much time to explore it. The view from this site is wonderful!

  • More ruins incas, not better than you see on other sites and not worthwhile to go there expressly, Yes if you're only going as part of a tour. Preferably with guide

  • These are ruins of a fortress that held a little army that was protecting Cuzco from attacks. It is also one of 8 reflector towers that held metals that reflected light between one another letting all towers/armies know fast if something was going on.
  • This archeological site offer magnificent views of the valley. Such a nature place we also seen shepherd herding the sheeps
  • It was a nice place. You should visit it.
  • Puka Pukara is a site of military ruins in Peru situated in the Cusco Region, Cusco Province, Cusco District, near Cusco.
  • Where: Cusco, Peru What: Puca Pucara, archeological site How was it: This is a beautiful place offering great views of the mountains. We were very tired from our overnight flight and not used to the altitude yet. Needless to say, we didn't have the necessary strength to visit the entire place but we appreciated the beauty. You can visit this site as part of the city tour, along with Qenko and Tombomachay. Consider the city tour if you are short for time. We forget if they had guides at the entrance. You can pay for guides at the other main sights (like Machu Picchu, Saksaywaman and Pisac), but it will get repetitive and expensive. Our thoughts shared with you ! ;-) Grade: Eli = 4, Serge = 4 Recommend: Yes, it's part of the 'boleto touristico' and a nice place to check out ! Really nice city views

One of Peru's most visited cities, Cusco boasts lodgings suitable for every traveler's needs. Scores of hotels ensure plenty of comfortable rooms for tourists coming to explore the nearby archeological sites. Despite the abundance of hotels, room rates remain among the highest in the country, especially during peak season (June to mid-September). Budget-conscious visitors can choose from a range of hostels and small family-run hotels, many located in quiet streets just a walk away from the town's central area.
