Puka Pukara, Cusco

3.8
An interesting and atmospheric historical site, Puka Pukara represents a set of Incan military ruins. Still a source of debate, the purpose of the fort was at least partially militarily minded, though an abundance of other features--including baths and plazas--point to the possibility the site contained more than just barracks and weapon stores. Admire the views of the surrounding forest from what is a well-positioned local vantage point, and admire the coloration of the rocks (the name translates as "Red Fortress") used for the walls of the main buildings. • Puka Pukara is a not very large Archaeological Park, but cute and interesting. It is located in the middle of a great landscape, giving you much warmth. I recommend traverse it with a guide because it is very difficult to appreciate it without knowing the details of what you are seeing. We had an excellent guide called Manuel de travel Pacific. He was very sympathetic and didactic. In these ruins, one learns more than anything about types of constructions and hierarchies of the Inca culture. As it is not too large, it is good to visit as part of a tour that will visit other places. For example, we visited Saqsaywaman, Pukapukara and Tambomachay, Q' q'enqo on the same tour.

  • A beautiful example of Inca construction. The ruins have so much to tell you. It is highly recommended that you travel here with a guide if you are not a Peruvian. The views are magnificent, valleys surrounding you and mountains in the distance. Beware of the merchants outside of the sign, as they will try everything to sell you something.
  • Driving throughout Countryside dates back so far amazing
  • These are ruins of a fortress that held a little army that was protecting Cuzco from attacks. It is also one of 8 reflector towers that held metals that reflected light between one another letting all towers/armies know fast if something was going on.
  • Interesting and nice touristic place to visit. The guy checking the tickets is very polite and friendly with all the visitors. That's very important.
  • Take a cab from Cusco to Tambomachay and cross the street to Puca. Walk back to town after the visit
