Puka Pukara, Cusco

(3.8/5 based on 480+ reviews on the web)
An interesting and atmospheric historical site, Puka Pukara represents a set of Incan military ruins. Still a source of debate, the purpose of the fort was at least partially militarily minded, though an abundance of other features--including baths and plazas--point to the possibility the site contained more than just barracks and weapon stores. Admire the views of the surrounding forest from what is a well-positioned local vantage point, and admire the coloration of the rocks (the name translates as "Red Fortress") used for the walls of the main buildings. Put Puka Pukara into our Cusco trip builder and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • In fact, spent many years attention given to these ruins by him that have no great thing of what was this city and therefore not seen.

  • Another archaeological site of the Sacred Valley of the Inca, near the city and easy access. It's worth it.

  • Structure that served as a fortress and commercial centre. Another fine example of engineering and intelligence of the Incas.

  • Nice site! Visit together with Tambomachay, Q'inqu and Sacsaywaman.
  • An Amazing Incan site in Peru. Very cool ruins and history at the site. These are all over Peru and each one has a story.
  • Nice, but start in the city and machu pichu instead.
  • Cold and dark when we went but if you go in day time, much nicer
  • Was it a fortress, or a hostel for messengers and merchants? Mystical place
