Pre-Columbian Art Museum, Cusco

4.2
#4 of 25 in Museums in Cusco
See a collection of art and artifacts at Pre-Columbian Art Museum, a heritage center that sensitively and sympathetically details the artistic progress and cultural development of natives before the colonial era. Built on the site an Incan ceremonial court, the museum's main building was designed as a colonial mansion in 1580. A historic monument of Cusco reopened as a museum in 2003, the building  now displays a collection of artworks and objects from the pre-Columbian times. Take a tour of the museum to see the finely sculpted jewelry, ornate pots, and ceremonial masks made by native cultures between 1250 BCE and 1532 CE. • I went here to kill time in Cusco and it was interesting. I am more interested in anthropology than art specifically, but find that some art museums can give you a good idea of the development and con...  more »
  • On the recommendation of acquaintances, we were in the pre-Columbian art museum / Museo de Arte Precolombino in the Plaza de las Nazarenas and were not disappointed. The Museum is not large, but the 20 soles (around 5 euros) are well spent, because the ceramics, carvings and trinkets in the rooms are beautifully presented the Casa Cabrera. Pieces from different cultures can be seen: the Nazca, Moche, Huari, Chimú and the Inca. On the ground floor with a beautiful inner courtyard, which houses a restaurant, are still spaces with pieces of jewelry made of shells, gold and silver. In my eyes-important note: The exhibits are described not in German, but the texts are in Spanish, English and French. A map with remarks in which area peoples such as the Moche lived and what time can be found in nearly every room. For me as a classification of the exhibits of sufficient, for lovers of detailed historical information may be too little. This museum very well liked, especially since a nice contrast and a great addition it's to enterprising and very tourist drive in Cusco city centre.
