Head to the 16th-century Museo de Vida Monastica - Monasterio de Santa Catalina del Cusco to see where women from rich and powerful families came to live a life of chastity, obedience, and continual prayer and work. A dimly lit interior, quiet atmosphere, and mannequins dressed as nuns provide an insight into convent life. Today, roughly 20 nuns live in the northern quarter of the convent, while the rest is open to the public. • The museum traces the life of the nuns at the convent. Nothing transcendent, creepy, and uninteresting for me. 8 soles the entrance.

  • Church was built in 1605 on one of the most important enclosures in the time of the Incas the Aqllawasi or House of the Chosen or Virgins of the Sun; where the most beautiful women, of great virtues and lineage of the whole Tawantinsuyo, dedicated to the worship of the Sun, preparation of their ceremonies, carried out the fabric and clothing for the Inca, were in charge of preparing the Sanchu or ceremonial bread and the Aqcha or sacred chicha, these women were kept virgins and in addition they had to keep the fire of the Inti Raymi lit all year round. The church treasures beautiful baroque altars and a superb 17th-century pulpit. The museum presents a recreation of the cloister life worn by the nuns since the 17th century. The church has a main altar of golden cedar with mixed style covered in gold leaf, in the central portion and upwards is the bulking image of the "Sacred Heart of Jesus" and below St. Catherine and Santo Domingo; it has a pulpit carved in cedar and four other minor altarpieces all gilded. Today the church and convent of Santa Catalina is a museum of colonial art considered perhaps the most complete in the city. Another interesting place to visit is the Chapter Hall, contains murals of Tadeo Escalante, a work that represents religious life at the top. The alto choir has a rustic organ made in Cusco and canvases of the life of Santa Catalina. Unmissable visit.

  • Don't forget to take the museum halfway up the stairs, otherwise you will miss half, as also described by others on a rainy day, nice that spaces are made a bit more speaker by dolls in nuns clothing

  • A somewhat different museum to visit on a journey more to Inca culture, but it is worth to know how it was a life of nuns based on the life of Santa Catalina. Feb/19 was $8 soles p. P

  • The Chapter House fresco is certainly the most fascinating place of the visible part of the monastery, still inhabited by the nuns. In the Museum are reconstructed the main points of the monastic life, the novitiate, the communal dining, to manual work and prayer. Very nice double arch on the ground floor and above. Interesting the picture gallery, with some impressive local authors who had absorbed (very nicely) Spanish style.

  • The space today occupied by the Museum and monastery of Santa Catalina de Siena, was formerly occupied by the home of the chosen site that housed the most beautiful women of the Empire and dedicated to worship of the Sun God, served the Inca Emperor and performed works textiles and culinary arts. The Museum houses a varied collection of paintings from the Cusquenha school, colonial-era tapestries and articles and objects that tell the story of the place.
