Inca Trail, Cusco

4.3
#1 of 13 in Trails in Peru
One of the most famous hikes in the entire world, Inca Trail wends its way up through the jungles and mountains from Cusco to the legendary city of Machu Picchu. Stretching for 43 km (26 mi), the trail takes several days to complete and involves an intense ascent to altitudes of more than 4,200 m (13,800 ft). Trek your way along winding stone paths, some hundreds of years old, through rugged alpine valleys and cloud forests, passing ancient Inca sites along the way. At the end, you'll get to marvel at the terraces and towering peaks of Machu Picchu. However, keep in mind the restrictions placed on the trail; you must go with a registered trekking agency. The Peruvian government limits the number of hikers each day and season in order to protect the environment, so be sure to book and obtain your permit far in advance to avoid disappointment, particularly during the high season. Plan your visit to Inca Trail and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Cusco road trip planner .

  • Good service on board, but a rough ride. Could be due to rail or poor maintenance of cars
  • Do not choose this company. I paid for a executive service and got a regular one when going from Ollantaytambo to Machu Picchu and when regressing the air conditioned was not working. Have the Peru rail as first option, not Inca Rail
  • It's a bit expensive but it beats the alternative of bussing it back from Machu pichu. The company seem very organised and service was good but the carriage was uncomfortably warm and quite shakey.
  • Great experience, but had mechanical problems on the way back
  • Very orderly service and free tea!

Where to stay in Cusco

One of Peru's most visited cities, Cusco boasts lodgings suitable for every traveler's needs. Scores of hotels ensure plenty of comfortable rooms for tourists coming to explore the nearby archeological sites. Despite the abundance of hotels, room rates remain among the highest in the country, especially during peak season (June to mid-September). Budget-conscious visitors can choose from a range of hostels and small family-run hotels, many located in quiet streets just a walk away from the town's central area.
