Sacred Valley of the Incas, Cusco Region

Once at the heart of the Inca Empire, Sacred Valley of the Incas plays home to many of the region's most popular archeological sites, cities, and places to visit. Grab your boots and trek through the area to get an up-close look at the mountain environment via the network of hiking trails and paths. Explore the rugged mountain valley to get a glimpse of Inca fortifications and settlements like Pisac, Moray, Tipon, and Ollantaytambo, which feature terraced hillsides and imposing stone citadels. The valley also boasts a number of quiet villages and colonial-era gems; Cusco is perhaps the best known, but plenty of smaller villages featuring markets and sights of their own line the valley's length. • Make sure to get a guide to learn and soak in everything about this beautiful location. A good amount of walking parking sucks so a guide who knows the area will make it better.
  • Beautiful and mind refreshing scenery. One must surely visit such a place
  • The Sacred Valley is a region in Peru's Andean highlands. Along with the nearby town of Cusco and the ancient city of Machu Picchu, it formed the heart of the Inca Empire. Stretching roughly 60 kilometers, it’s an area of fertile farmland and Spanish colonial villages like Pisac and Ollantaytambo. Pisac is known for its Sunday handicraft market and hilltop Incan citaThe Sacred Valley of the Incas (Spanish: Valle Sagrado de los Incas; Quechua: Willka Qhichwa), or the Urubamba Valley, is a valley in the Andes of Peru, 20 kilometres (12 mi) at its closest north of the Inca capital of Cusco. It is located in the present-day Peruvian region of Cusco. In colonial documents it was referred to as the "Valley of Yucay." The Sacred Valley was incorporated slowly into the incipient Inca Empire during the period from 1000 to 1400 CE.[1]The Sacred Valley is a major tourist destination. In 2013, 1.2 million people, 800,000 of them non-Peruvians, are estimated to have visited Machu Picchu, its most famous archaeological site. Many of the same tourists also visited other archaeological sites and modern towns in the Sacred Valley. Stretching from Pisac to Ollantaytambo, this fertile valley is irrigated by the Urubamba River. The Chanapata civilization first utilized this area starting at around 800 BCE because of the rich soil used for agriculture. The Qotacalla civilization lived in the Sacred Valley from 500 to 900 CE The Killke civilization then lived in the Sacred Valley from 900 CE until the Incan Empire took over the region in 1420. The Incan Empire ruled this area until the arrival of the Spanish.
  • Or pay a good recommended agency or do it yourself, you can also contract a private tour. Don't pay a cheap 50( agency) , 70 soles ( in your hotel) tour to take you to the sacred valley. They promise a tour and the "Guide" just will explain in the archaeologic areas, the most of the trip they just will name one or two places, or they will not explain ANYTHING!!! . I took a "tour" in the main plaza and it happened!!! Besides they make you run... Take a bus and do it yourself...do it in your own pace!! Ollantaytambo and Pisac were impressive and believe me you will wish to stay there more time than a regular "Tour" offer you.
  • WOW! so many different and amazing stuff. A must!
