The World Heritage-listed Archaeological Site of Chavin represents a complex containing ruins and artifacts from the ancient Chavin civilization, which thrived well over two thousand years ago. Excavated in 1919, the site is situated in the High Andes at an altitude of 3,177m (10,423 ft). See terraced temples, main square, underground galleries, and other stone structures built by an advanced pre-Incan culture. Other highlights include animalistic sculptures, megaliths, pottery, and other items exhibited at the onsite museum.   • An absolutely fabulous opportunity to learn about Peru's past. Exploring the site without a guide provides you with more flexibility and time to visit the underground chambers. 
  • The first impression is close to the disappointment, but that doesn't last long. One is quickly captivated by the mystery emanating from the place. Austere and massive outside does not imagine the inner "life", a maze of corridors, as fascinating as enigmatic reserves. The vision of the idol stuck on Earth for thousands of years is astounding. The conception of society by the Chavin suggests that he was a very smart people... but there is much to discover and the evidence to find. Whatever it is you go with a good guide, it seems imperative
