Catarata de Gocta, Peru

4.9
#14 of 107 in Nature in Peru
Waterfall Nature / Park
Unchartered territory until 2005, Catarata de Gocta got its name on the map--literally and figuratively--following an expedition led by German Stefan Ziemendorff. The perennial waterfall cascades over two drops, with a total measured height of 771 m (2,530 ft), making the waterfall the third tallest free-leaping waterfall in the world. To experience the falls up close, you'll have to hike; the trail is about 6 km (3.7 mi) in length. Be sure to wear proper hiking shoes, as the trail can be slippery at times, and don't forget waterproof clothing to protect against the spray off the falls as you get close to its base. Choose to start, finish, or center your holiday on a trip to Catarata de Gocta by using our Chachapoyas family vacation planner.

  • Cataract is impressive from the first moment that is, however I think is not for everyone, since the walk is quite difficult. I do not recommend going with older adults or people that hinders walking since it is a trail road, 5.5 km of ida and 5.5 km to return (approximately 2.5 hours each way), and climbs and steep descents, harrows, mud and rocks (went without rain, with rain must be harder). While there are horses that people rent for 40 soles back and forth, the horses stop is at 3.8 km, so you must walk the rest. In my opinion, the difficulty is 7/10. At the foot of the waterfall feels quite cold, but with a diver is enduring. In rainy season usually rocks gallitos. A walk that is worthwhile.

  • We made the Trek from the village of Cocachimba, where we hired a guide, is at a distance of almost 6 Km from the waterfall, in time we took little more than 2 hours of ida and about 2 hours with 30 for return. I believe that the difficulty of the road is half mainly because there are several rises and drops that they can be tiring to which they are not accustomed to hiking activities or children (saw some along the way), for which rent horses to those who wish to do so. The road is spectacular, amidst the greenery going on some bridges and you can see as we approach the falls in almost all the way, arriving the breeze refreshes you while you appreciate the beauty of the waterfall and its around. Take than usual in this kind of walks: water, insect repellent and Sun block. For those who like nature, landscapes and hiking this is an essential journey if you are going by Chachapoyas.

  • to get it is a long walk with ascents and descents it is recommended to rent horses tours offer it in the town before. only horse reaches a point of there walk an hour more, but helps you a lot, not only because the road is well long but because it rains at times and leaves much mud areas that without horse end up badly. All the way is beautiful vegetation, you arrive to the last fall where these the base cataract, impressive strength and fall and the surrounding landscape more adventure the walking and horse... 100% recommended. recommend without hesitation
