Cuarto del Rescate, Cajamarca

3.4
Visit Cuarto del Rescate to see the room in which the Incan Emperor Atahualpa was imprisoned in the 16th century. In the waning days of the Incan Empire, the emperor was captured by Spanish conquistadores led by Francisco Pizarro. While in captivity, Atahualpa offered to pay his ransom by filling the room he was held in with gold, and the two adjacent rooms with silver. Ultimately the Spanish accepted the ransom, but executed the emperor anyway. Hire a guide for the full story of the capture and ransom, as well as interesting facts about the room itself. • Unbelievable that this place has survived the destruction suffered by the city of Cajamarca in the 16th century, the rains and the passage of time. It is a sample of the encounter between two cultures.

  • Good to see. Could do with more commentary about the place.
  • Small yet interesting piece of local history
  • Guides are only in Spanish, pretty knowledgeable. Make sure you ask about the unofficial history too. Official one was written by Spanish.

  • The fourth rescue is located in the building No. 750 of Jiron Amalia Puga 50 meters from the Plaza de Armas. It is a building whose dimensions are 11.80 m long, 7.30 m wide and 3.10 m high. This is a trail that exists of the Inca Empire and is the symbol of the encounter between two cultures, enclosure by Peruvian historians considered the place where it was kept a prisoner to the Sapa Inca Atahualpa, who spent the last days of his life held in the, specifically between November 16, 1532 and the 26 July 1533 (8meses and 10 days), after being captured by the Spanish conquistadors. This fourth rescue has survived the passage of time, the rains, the destruction that was the city in the 16th century. In this room you drew a line far would reach the gold and silver that the inca Atahualpa should pay for their rescue. The inca Atahualpa was to bring the gold and silver from Cuzco, Huaylas and Huamachuco, and the Spaniards killed him in the Plaza de Armas.
