Plaza Mayor de Ayacucho, Ayacucho

4.5
#2 of 19 in Things to do in Ayacucho
Lined with both modern and colonial architecture, Plaza Mayor de Ayacucho is a favorite stop for many tourists exploring the city. In the middle of the square stands an equestrian statue of General Antonio Jose de Sucre, while an ornate cathedral shares the space with surrounding 17th- and 18th-century buildings. This area is well lit at night, so you can sightsee without worrying about safety. Special events occasionally take place here, including firework displays and religious processions. Don't miss the chance to try homemade ice cream from local vendors, created right before your eyes. The statue to the Center highlights much of day and night with lights. The gardens that surround it along with the ancient buildings and the Cathedral plaza de armas make a very nice attraction to visit at any time of the day.

Uan square that despite maintaining "style" of all the squares made by the Spaniards is pleasantly differs from the rest because unlike others here we see buildings with arches on its 4 sides, is a pool that not has been remodeled since its construction, clean and with many green areas, night lighting that makes it look simply special.

Where to stay in Ayacucho

The colonial-era streets of Ayacucho house atmospheric and sensitively restored hotels and family-run inns. Larger hotels built in recent times provide a wider range of facilities and services, including pools, restaurants, and bars. Informal and budget-friendly guesthouses fit in neatly with the look of private homes and stores on the residential streets in town, providing particularly good options for budget-conscious visitors who want to delve into the rich culture of everyday Ayacucho.
