#2 of 12 in Museums in Arequipa
Museo Santuarios Andinos (Museum of Andean Sanctuaries) is famous for its collection of Incan ice mummies, including a 600-year-old frozen body of a young girl called Juanita. Start your visit with the film about this discovery and the history of the Incan child sacrifices to the mountain gods. Then, browse the exhibits of pottery, jewelry, textiles, and figurines, which were buried along with the mummies as funeral offerings. Exhibited in a refrigerated glass case in the last room, Juanita's body undergoes restoration every year, while another mummy takes her place. • We decided to visit this Museum even though many do not advised. We like even if we agree on the need to invest more on this little sweetie renovating the rooms and refurbishing the offer. The Museum is located near Plaza de Armas but it is not easy to locate it. If you ask will show you the way. After paying the ticket (20 g) you'll have to deposit backpacks, cameras and mobile phones. You will then need to wait a bit for the start of an introductory video that will be screened in two rooms in a variety of languages. The video tells how she was discovered Janita, the Mummy found on the glacier. The movie is really poor quality but introduces the history of this poor girl sacrificed. Then visit the Museum independently or with a guide. We opted for the guide that shows in the various rooms in Peru, Bolivia and Chile made finds of several Mummies and funerary objects found in various sites. In the last room you will see Juanita enclosed in its display case refrigerated. In the rooms is quite cold and dark, we advise you to bring a jacket. The guide is not included in the ticket but asks for a tip at the discretion of the tourist. Although, as already written, the Museum's outdated recommend a visit!

  • This is a small museum but very interesting. You start the tour with a 20 minute film about the expedition to uncover the Inca ice maiden Juanita. The guide is very knowledgeable and the tour explains...  more »
  • In a very nice house in the center of Arequipa, is a small museum that capitalizes on the presence of the Mummy Juanita, fairly well-presented, the entry price, seems a bit high especially because you have to pay the Guide, we liked it so much. They should find out if they will see the Mummy Juanita because they keep it certain months of the year for preservation.

  • From historical perspective this place is simply amazing and that your back time when the incas ruled and believe in ancient gods and divinities. Juanita is not a mummy, but a sacrificed of young noble maiden to the volcano gods. She is preserved over the centuries as the volcano stop after the sacrifice and the area is maintained in a frozen state until recent volcanic activity and melting of the ice cap. The historical value of the artefacts and insights onto the past are worth the visit, tour guides are multilingual very helpful and knowledgeable. Strongly recommend it, as the exhibit is well presented and managed.
  • Most famous child mummy is on display here 8 months during a year. Her name was Juanita called ice a maiden (apparently due her frozen state when found) and was sacrificed (and probably lived her whole life with the knowledge that she will be sacrificed) to the Gods. She was sedated and hit in the head during sacrifice which is said to be as painless as possible. She wore veil and tunic that marked her coming from well off family. She had to climb the mountain on her way to her death. So tragic!
  • Very interesting and educational experience. In some ways it's difficult to process the old ways and how barbaric it was. But it's all history now.
  • Very interesting museum dedicated to sacrificed children on the mountain. The movie is worthwhile to get a good impression. No pictures allowed.
  • Educational and interesting. Might be a bit expensive, as others stated, but worth the money.
