History Museum · Museum
Museo Santuarios Andinos is famous for its collection of Incan ice mummies, including a 600-year-old frozen body of a young girl called Juanita. Start your visit with the film about this discovery and the history of the Incan child sacrifices to the mountain gods. Then, browse the exhibits of pottery, jewelry, textiles, and figurines, which were buried along with the mummies as funeral offerings. Exhibited in a refrigerated glass case in the last room, Juanita's body undergoes restoration every year, while another mummy takes her place. • Another good museum type tour. This is one of the better things to do in Arequipa and is easy to access from city center. We enjoyed the Museo. There were a couple nice little cafes near by so you...  more »

  • Our guide advised us to spend some time here and I am so happy he did. The story of the mummy is amazing and like nothing I've ever seen
  • Incredible museum and very interesting story about Juanita, the frozen maiden from the times of Incan sacrifices. Includes a 20 minute video in English/French/German and a guided tour explaining the discoveries of the sacrifice rituals. A bit spooky to see the preserved frozen body at the end of the tour though
  • Mattress might as well have been a cardboard box. The bar was empty yet determinedly blasted out music to the cavernous nothing until well into 10pm. Othewise - fine
  • Great place to see and learn about children sacrifice, 20 soles for foreigners you're not allowed in with backpacks or cell phones or any cameras for that matter.
  • Small but very efficiently presented. Very interesting history and narrator's comments.
