Museo Santuarios Andinos is famous for its collection of Incan ice mummies, including a 600-year-old frozen body of a young girl called Juanita. Start your visit with the film about this discovery and the history of the Incan child sacrifices to the mountain gods. Then, browse the exhibits of pottery, jewelry, textiles, and figurines, which were buried along with the mummies as funeral offerings. Exhibited in a refrigerated glass case in the last room, Juanita's body undergoes restoration every year, while another mummy takes her place. Plan your visit to Museo Santuarios Andinos and a wealth of other attractions, well-known and undiscovered, using our Arequipa itinerary builder.

  • The first thing is that you should be punctual for start point. Video that pass is poorly edited ancient malazoooo in a blurry TV screen, then the guide will explain objects found around Central magnificent of the mummies. Lights are low but I understand that it is to avoid the expense of colors of these objects valuable place is very cold Guide explained that it is to keep it more similar to the climate of the mountain so that they endure for more time. Then one quickly finds the girl of manpato (the Mummy) frozen in a refrigerated glass urn so you do not you can see and understand its details however one should know not to keep it that way simply it would initiate the process of decomposition. It is advisable if you paid 5 Suns and give him a tip of 10, I think that I do not pay more than 20 soles for all well not hard tour over 50 minutes.

  • While the Museum is relatively small, it has so well organized your information and in a very technical way, in a small space containing needed to make the visit worthwhile. Their guides are introduced to visitors in the world of the Inca culture and in the process of religious sacrifice, until suddenly you will reach the main room where the remains of the misnamed Mummy "Juanita" (because it was not embalmed, it is therefore a frozen corpse, not a Mummy) in a chilled URN that keeps the temperature which was in the heights where it was found , in the volcano Ampato. The entrance is very cheap and just keep in mind that the guide is not covered, so you must pay it at the end, depending on their level of satisfaction. It should be noted that are not allowed to take photographs or enter with cameras, cell phones or any package or bag inside, which are stored in lockers with key. The Museum, located in the La Merced Street, one block from the Plaza de Armas, is in charge of the University of Santa Maria of Arequipa, which does an excellent job. My family really enjoyed the visit and I think that it is highly recommended for any tourist, Peruvian or foreign, interested in archaeology, history or pre-Hispanic culture.

  • This is yet another over-hyped "attraction" in Peru that fails to live up to its reputation. The Jaunita story is certainly an interesting one from a historical / archeological perspective, but it is ...  read more »
  • Great to see and learn more about Juanita. You have to pay for a guide and entrance, which is a bit expensive
  • Educational and interesting. Might be a bit expensive, as others stated, but worth the money.
  • A little bit expensive at 20 soles entry. There are tours in Spanish and English, tips are expected. Interesting artifacts and of course, Juanita!
  • Weird.
  • Bring a jumper as it's cold inside to protect the artifacts
