Mundo Alpaca, Arequipa

4.2
Head to Mundo Alpaca to tour the farm and perhaps buy some hand-woven alpaca clothing. The tour will take you through the process of producing the wool and give an actual demonstration of the clothing being woven into a finished garment with exquisite patterns. Along the way you’ll be able to pet and feed with the alpacas and llamas and, of course, buy some of the final products yourself. • This little corner of Peru is just a few minutes walk from the Centre of Arequipa. If passed by the Santa Catalina Museum, there you will put more than two to three minutes to get there by continuing the opposite side of the Plaza de Armas. Step into a small world made of alpaca (obviously!) and all derivatives of its wool. The staff who will accompany you to know some examples of llama-alpaca and will show you on a brief tour as he works his wool. Downstairs there are machines that were used to create the threads. At the end there is a shop. Bathrooms available squeaky clean! The visit will take more than half an hour but we highly recommend it! Open from 8.30 to 18.30.

  • The Andean camelids are half of the attraction when travelling to Peru, Arequipa is no exception, so that if you have the opportunity of this guided tour, where you learn more of alpacas, llamas and vicunas; It is advisable to do so. Of course, at the end they are shopping, and perhaps this is not the place cheaper to make them. If you are looking for something simply of souvenir, in the Centre would have better options, and if you are looking for is an original garment for your wardrobe, I recommend stores as Kuna.

  • Highly recommend a visit here. Free entry to see their alpaca processing and pet alpacas.
  • I learned that there are 6 types of it.
  • A big store with alpaca and vicuña wool articles. But the nice thing here is that there us a small museum type exhibition of where the wool comes from and how it is processed to the consumer articles. Worth a half hour visit for sure.
  • Nice place to learn about the famous Ilama and Alpaca. There you can see live animals, the raw wool materials and live weaving by a local lady Peruvian weaver.
  • Great short activity near town if you wanted to see a range of different Alpaca and Lama. They have some sign boards showing the manufacture to the final product. Oh and it's free to have a look around!

Where to stay in Arequipa

Most accommodations in Arequipa cluster on the east side of the Chili River. The historical center offers the best selection of options, with plenty of budget hostels and mid-range hotels scattered throughout its streets. For something quieter, look north to the neighborhoods of Zemanat and San Jacinto. If you're looking for a suburban experience, stay in the western neighborhood of Yanahuara.
