Monasterio de Santa Catalina, Arequipa
(4.7/5 based on 4,400+ reviews on the web)
A visit to Monasterio de Santa Catalina allows you to get a feel for what life was like in the 16th century. Founded in 1580, the convent was open to girls from wealthy families, who were required to pay a hefty dowry for admission into its ranks. The enchanting monastery, which at its height hosted as many as 450 residents, now houses just 20 nuns. You can visit all save a few private parts of the monastery, appreciating the simple but touching architecture, washed in soft pastel colors. Consider hiring one of the English-speaking guides stationed at the monastery entrance to get the most out of your tour. Make Monasterio de Santa Catalina a centerpiece of your Arequipa vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Arequipa trip itinerary builder.

  • We have spent today 2.5 hours in this monastery and are immersed completely in this world. Indescribable the feeling through the ancient corridors to wander and discover another surprise behind each door. A guide is not mandatory because the most spaces on billboards even on German are explained. Take time. Be curious and go on a discovery tour. The views over the monastery and the city are incredibly impressive!

  • A monastery within the city of Arequipa. It's a expensive visit compared to the prices in Peru. We did the tour on ourself and didn't use a guide. If you have some time to kill it's a nice visit. Read...  more »
  • Now we thought to do this but it was bigger than expected and you keep wondering as to what. Remember what to eat in the garden in the middle.
