Monasterio de Santa Catalina, Arequipa
(4.7/5 based on 4,600+ reviews on the web)
A visit to Monasterio de Santa Catalina allows you to get a feel for what life was like in the 16th century. Founded in 1580, the convent was open to girls from wealthy families, who were required to pay a hefty dowry for admission into its ranks. The enchanting monastery, which at its height hosted as many as 450 residents, now houses just 20 nuns. You can visit all save a few private parts of the monastery, appreciating the simple but touching architecture, washed in soft pastel colors. Consider hiring one of the English-speaking guides stationed at the monastery entrance to get the most out of your tour. Make Monasterio de Santa Catalina a centerpiece of your Arequipa vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Arequipa trip itinerary builder.

  • It is essential to carry a guide for understanding the construction and details of this enormous place. Extraordinarily well preserved in its architecture, furniture and paintings. The cost is high but worth it

  • I do not usually criticise monuments, but I want to make an exception, because this building is one of those who most touched me in my life. For starters, I went to first hour, so I enjoyed a magnificent guided my solo tour. What most caught my attention of the place is that, unlike other convents, don't have feeling of oppression and darkness. The place is like an Arab Citadel. Each cell gives to the outside or to a cloister and the stories of nuns are to make a film. The night tour should be great, but there are also to go day to enjoy the effect of the walls indigo blue.
