Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus, Arequipa

(4.6/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web)
Admire the Baroque artistry of Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus, a historic place of worship in Cusco, the ancient capital of the Inca Empire. Construction began in 1576, though the building was severely damaged during an earthquake in the mid-17th century. Rebuilt two decades later, the church displays an attractive architectural style, while the interior boasts an impressive main altar covered in gold leaf, an atmospheric underground chapel, and a collection of original artworks dating back to the colonial era. Our Arequipa vacation planner makes visiting Iglesia de la Compania de Jesus and other Arequipa attractions simple, and helps you make a travel plan personal to you.

  • Much smaller than the Cathedral, located on the opposite corner to the latter, near the plaza Mayor. Inside there are some wooden altars covered with gold leaf and numerous paintings but the real treat is the chapel of Saint Ignatius, completely painted with flowers, fruits and tropical birds where they did the preparation of priests that they were to go to evangelize the people in the Amazon jungle.

  • It is one of the places to which you can access for free, very good site to learn and see up close the arequipeña history, also is a place to take photos, rest and eat since restaurants are within the workplace. I recommend climbing to the top floor to have a panoramic view of the city and make nice photos, if the sky is clear you can see the volcanoes and the Cathedral.
