El Misti, Arequipa

4.7
#2 of 8 in Parks in Arequipa
Standing tall above the city, El Misti is visible from just about anywhere in town. The 5,822 m (19,101 ft) volcano watches over the inhabitants, but many choose to get much closer by attempting to reach the top of this active volcano. The locals recommend booking a guided trek if you’re hoping to reach the summit, as this is a difficult climb due to the need to acclimatize. Be prepared with lots of layers, hat, and gloves as the air on your way can be surprisingly chilly. You'll experience unmatched views from the top. Put El Misti on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Arequipa holiday planner.

You can see this volcano from just about any part of town. It is still active and erupts during the day.  more »

The good: a great experience walking on Earth, rock, ice and sand to enjoy a wonderful view of 5,822 meters above sea level the experience: definitely need to have as much equipment as previous experience walking in mountain already that you should carry your equipment (sleeping, clothing, tent), water and food. The first day walking between 4 to 6 hours up to the base camp (we did it in 5) and then you wake up around 2: 30 am for breakfast and get ready to attack the Summit. We start approx at 3: 30 am and reached the Summit at 11 am approx then enjoy the sunrise and walk on ice for more evening to start return to the field base to lift everything and go to the point of pick up (reach approx. 5.30 pm) sad thing: the camp area has too many waste (bags and toilet paper) , destroying the landscape, nature and the recommendation experience: if possible take your own sleeping and sleeping pad and a cane of trek for the way down through the ice; rest well the night before the tour and enjoy the route; Security: If or if you hire a guide, if you don't know the path is easy to get lost and there is no water on all the way

Where to stay in Arequipa

Most accommodations in Arequipa cluster on the east side of the Chili River. The historical center offers the best selection of options, with plenty of budget hostels and mid-range hotels scattered throughout its streets. For something quieter, look north to the neighborhoods of Zemanat and San Jacinto. If you're looking for a suburban experience, stay in the western neighborhood of Yanahuara.
