El Misti, Arequipa

(4.7/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
Standing tall above the city, El Misti is visible from just about anywhere in town. The 5,822 m (19,101 ft) volcano watches over the inhabitants, but many choose to get much closer by attempting to reach the top of this active volcano. The locals recommend booking a guided trek if you’re hoping to reach the summit, as this is a difficult climb due to the need to acclimatize. Be prepared with lots of layers, hat, and gloves as the air on your way can be surprisingly chilly. You'll experience unmatched views from the top. Put El Misti on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Arequipa holiday planner.

  • If want to test their physical, be in the nature and see a landscape great, them recommend go! There is the option of go in an only day but is little likely arrive to the cima (for that are two days), can get until to the camp base, that is all a challenge!

  • After about 6 months of training, I traveled to Arequipa with the intention to climb the volcano el Misti with their 5825m. I was in town for 15 days, and 9 days acclimatization in nearby mountains did the volcano ... On the tenth day we decided to make the climb. Were 17 hours between the departure and the descent, we did a quick Trek, it was January, little snow on the slopes, the problem was taking my paragliding to take off the top of it, with an extra weight on the coast some 25 kg, was pretty overwhelming after the 5000 m. We slept in a camp at 15,000 ft., after 8 hours of climbing and around midnight we went out to attack the top in the morning. As I reported I was with 25 kg of weight (paragliding) which made a lot of balance, hypoxia and the steps near the Ridge, around the 6:00 morning were at the top, on the side of the volcanic crater in activity ... an unforgettable image. Recommend for people who have a relatively good physical preparation. .. my Brazilian friend had trouble 5600 and couldn't get on top ...

  • Was off-road motorcycling in the area. Truly amazing landscapes. Go with a guide so it is safer... small towns and villages, dirt roads winding up dan down. Get ready for a bit of altitude sickness - ...  more »
