El Misti, Arequipa

4.7
#2 of 7 in Nature in Arequipa
Volcano Nature / Park
Standing tall above the city, El Misti is visible from just about anywhere in town. The 5,822 m (19,101 ft) volcano watches over the inhabitants, but many choose to get much closer by attempting to reach the top of this active volcano. The locals recommend booking a guided trek if you’re hoping to reach the summit, as this is a difficult climb due to the need to acclimatize. Be prepared with lots of layers, hat, and gloves as the air on your way can be surprisingly chilly. You'll experience unmatched views from the top. Put El Misti on your schedule, and learn what else deserves a visit by using our Arequipa holiday planner.

Where to stay in Arequipa

Most accommodations in Arequipa cluster on the east side of the Chili River. The historical center offers the best selection of options, with plenty of budget hostels and mid-range hotels scattered throughout its streets. For something quieter, look north to the neighborhoods of Zemanat and San Jacinto. If you're looking for a suburban experience, stay in the western neighborhood of Yanahuara.

  • I wanted to climb El Misti but I was on my own in Arequipa and couldn't find a group to join. Going alone is understandably more expensive than being with a group but I went with Peru Trek, Calle Jeru...  more »
  • There are better pictures as in May the tip is covered in a volcano. The volcanos and mountains dominate the city and the views are one of the best memories we gave of Peru.  more »
