The descent to the canyon is beautiful with the Agency Antipode (great french speaking guide). Do with a guide to take full advantage of his anecdotes and advice: tasting of very original fruit in small villages, very nice restaurants, and Nice cottage in San Galle. Awesome views especially in the descent. A return to Arequipa with very nice stops: cliff to the condors, markets, churches, villages... Two days really well organized.

I did it on a motorcycle, from Chivay to Cabanaconde, where I stayed. The path until there is good, bordering the Canyon, the views are breathtaking at different times of the day. The Cruz del Condor viewpoint is on that path. From Cabanaconde to Huambo is in repair, and from there to Screes is pure gravel but with amazing landscapes. It is separated from the Canon in Huambo. See peaks, volcanoes, valleys. Without waste. Peoples lunch is cheap in markets. Accommodation in decent and good price also.

Where to stay in Arequipa

Most accommodations in Arequipa cluster on the east side of the Chili River. The historical center offers the best selection of options, with plenty of budget hostels and mid-range hotels scattered throughout its streets. For something quieter, look north to the neighborhoods of Zemanat and San Jacinto. If you're looking for a suburban experience, stay in the western neighborhood of Yanahuara.
