Phutuq K'usi, Aguas Calientes

(220 reviews on the web)
Mountain Nature / Park
Scale Phutuq K'usi to traverse a recently discovered Incan trail and view the far side of Machu Picchu. The trail starts with a wire climb up the side of the mountain. As you continue on, ladders are available for climbing, though some areas still require the use of upper body strength to go further. These aspects make the trail difficult for anyone not in good physical shape, but if you are determined and able enough, you can reach the summit. Those who have climbed it before suggest bringing grip gloves and good hiking shoes. • This is one of my favorite hikes in the entire world! I went this past weekend to climb it again (February 4, 2017) - but unfortunately the ladders and the cable are no longer there. You will need goo...  more »
  • This is an amazing climb. It is very very dangerous. The old gear is gone. Only try this if you have your own gear and are an experienced climber.  more »
  • If you have altitude issues or stomach upset, as many visitors may, this is a fairly grueling hike, at home you could do it in less than two hours, but in Peru it may take you four. Spray yourself wit...  more »
