Founded by grenadier Carlos Murphy in 1770, the city of Caacupe serves as the capital of the Cordillera department. Each year 300,000 pilgrims come to the city's cathedral to see a carved statuette from the 16th century, said to have survived a great flood and performed miracles. An annual religious festival here honors the Virgin Mary, the area surrounding the cathedral filling with festivities and pilgrims. Beyond that, Caacupe's attractions come in the form of nice local restaurants, scenic public parks in the center of town, and a smattering of cultural points of interest. Where to stay in Caacupe

Make sure you book well in advance if planning on visiting Caacupe for the festival in December, as the town has a only few scattered hotels. Both simple and luxury options exist, though accommodations remain pretty scant in general. Consider staying in Asuncion, the nation's capital and largest city. Located around an hour and a half from Caacupe by car, the capital offers a wide range of lodgings, with hotels of all sizes, rental apartments, and plenty more.
