  • The building of the Metropolitan Cathedral, is a site of great relevance to all Paraguay. Located in the very centre of the city of Asunción, has, in its history of several passages which gave shape to the current building. Already settled in the colonial era, the assumption Cathedral, is one of the most emblematic buildings in the capital, with its peculiar shape, must pass through several transformations since the year 1539, its first year. This first work was very rustic - adobe and Palm - is why throughout its life, the building of the Cathedral must go through years and years of transformation. In addition to the rustic materials used for its construction, the incipient rains and floods of the River Paraguay, each time interval should knock down construction and change on the other. At the time of Dr. Francia came down the Bell Tower of the Cathedral, which should be replaced by another, but by decision of the own dictator, Cathedral left without a steeple, even up until the day of his death, the bells were placed temporarily so they ringing and call the people to prayer for the soul of the deceased. With the arrival of the consuls Carlos Antonio López and Mariano Roque Alonso to the Paraguay Government, decided to demolish the old building of the Cathedral - which did not even have a bell tower - to replace it with one more modern and relevant to its role as main Cathedral of the Paraguay again. On October 27, 1845 was blessed the new building - not yet completed - with respect to the new construction I share this paragraph taken from the book "Temples of assumption" Margarita Duran: "the temple consists of three naves, separated by two rows of arches; your plant is rectangular in shape and its neoclassical façade, measures approximately 80 meters. Long and 32 wide. Internally it measures more than 60 meters. long and a few wide 23. The roof is gabled and inside, simple polychromed coffered of sawn timber make ceiling spacious ships shared by rows of large fluted". In this way is preserved to this day one of the buildings from the 19th century, stands. Today the Metropolitan Cathedral preserves even that first image of the Lopez era, although I had minor modifications, for its conservation. Every 15th of August is celebrated in its central mass of the founding party of the capital and the patronal feast of the Virgen de la Asunción. Between its columns and altarpieces people lived moments of glory and sadness, the Metropolitan Cathedral preserved in his paintings and bell towers, in addition to the Catholic faith, the joy of being a depository of a story told from the colonial era, joining the Paraguayan people from birth to what is now a sovereign Republic independent. BORN IN PARAGUAY. I'M PARAGUAYAN.

  • The assumption Cathedral is a beautiful expression of the neoclassical. It is not the original... There were several in that location and a little more towards the river. The current dates from 1845. The current environment is a little unfortunate... the square as you da.su frame this busy and there are a number of shanty what little it completely. Beside this the Catholic University of Asunción. It gives its name to the neighborhood in which it is located. In that location is the old Senate, former Chamber of Deputies which is integrated into the current and new building of the National Congress and is also the headquarters of the national police.

  • Beautiful, great and very good energy, I had the opportunity to watch some masses here with the Bishop. An incredible spiritual experience, in this occasion the people who sang were very inspired and I was touched as nowhere else, not even in Rome felt so full as the masses I attended here.
