Sepik River, Papua New Guinea

3.6
#3 of 9 in Nature in Papua New Guinea
Winding through the landscape of Papua New Guinea is Sepik River, the island's longest river and one of the the largest uncontaminated freshwater wetland systems in the Asia-Pacific area. The river has long been a resource for native peoples, and a journey along this feature will include several tribal villages where ancient customs are still followed. It is highly recommended that you go on this arduous adventure with a guide. Choose an English-speaking guide who can also communicate with (and is on good terms with) the village people. Tour companies surrounding this attraction typically provide a survival kit with mosquito nets and basic food provisions. Consider bringing small gifts to give your village friends along the way, like candy, Tylenol, or cheap headlamps. Where to stay in Port Moresby

Hotels are dotted rather haphazardly throughout Port Moresby, and tend to be somewhat expensive. Several four- and five-star accommodations cluster on the small peninsula also called Port Moresby, but known to locals simply as "Town." The nearby Ela Beach ranks as one of Port Moresby's most scenic areas and a popular recreational spot. The suburb Boroko is most convenient for public transport, but this once-bustling commercial center has lost much of its luster in recent years. Most hotels will arrange pick-up and drop-off from the airport.
