Plaza de Francia, Panama City
(4.3/5 based on 420+ reviews on the web)
Shaded by flame trees adorned with bright-orange blossoms, Plaza de Francia pays homage to French workers who died from yellow fever and malaria during the construction of the canal. A statue of one of Panama's founding fathers and presidents greats you at the front of the plaza. Walk to the obelisk topped by a rooster at the end of the plaza, and see marble plaques and statues, which recount the arduous task of the 22,000 workers. Look for the statue of Carlos J.Finlay, a Cuban doctor whose discovery helped eradicate the yellow fever, across from the French Embassy among the busts of French lieutenants. The former Spanish dungeons, which line the side of the plaza, today house upscale art galleries and shops. An elevated walk atop the old fortification walls offers views of the ocean. Plaza de Francia is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, Panama City Edition.

  • It is a bit neglected, and find trash on the ground. Without embargo, e s a place that you must visit when in the old town. We find ourselves with raspadilleros (that really scrape the ice). Many street vendors.

  • This is located next to the French Embassy here in Panama City. It describes the French effort at the Canal. Well worth a visit if you are in Casco Viejo
  • The square contains a number of statues of historical figures and friezes that tell about Panama ´ s history. They penetrate all for a restoration. It's hard to read the texts. Some of the Frisians had lost pieces. Then there are souvenir stalls in galore. Making space for a bit of a shambles.
