Panama Canal, Panama City
(4.6/5 based on 12,000+ reviews on the web)
A marvel of modern engineering, Panama Canal stretches for 77 km (48 mi) and links the Pacific with the Atlantic Ocean via the Caribbean Sea. France initiated the construction in 1888, and the United States completed it in 1914; today, it still ranks as one of the largest and most challenging projects of its kind. Over 14,000 vessels pass through the canal's three gravity-powered locks each year, avoiding the much longer route around the tip of South America. Be sure to admire the canal from both land and water--many local tour operators offer partial-transit cruises with complimentary hotel pickup and drop-off. Make Panama Canal a centerpiece of your Panama City vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Panama City trip builder.

  • There is no doubt that the Panama Canal is a wonderful world engineering achievement. The human told to accomplish it (about 28,000 died) is staggering. And, the savings in lives, cost and time utiliz...  more »
  • Visiting the Panama Canal and having the opportunity to see a ship pass through was the highlight of my vacation!
  • If you visit Panama, I would say that it is almost obligatory to visit the channel. An impressive piece of engineering. I had the opportunity to see the passage of cargo ships and the way that van filling / emptying the locks. Incredible. The new locks were opened for super freighters, although it is not far from the observation post.
