Panama Canal, Panama City

4.6
A marvel of modern engineering, Panama Canal stretches for 77 km (48 mi) and links the Pacific with the Atlantic Ocean via the Caribbean Sea. France initiated the construction in 1888, and the United States completed it in 1914; today, it still ranks as one of the largest and most challenging projects of its kind. Over 14,000 vessels pass through the canal's three gravity-powered locks each year, avoiding the much longer route around the tip of South America. Be sure to admire the canal from both land and water--many local tour operators offer partial-transit cruises with complimentary hotel pickup and drop-off. • In just one visit you can see both locks. You can take a barge to cross the canal from side to side. You can take your car and visit the dam. Always wonderful and hope you find a blue skies evening to...  more »
  • Without a doubt this is a piece of engineering that you should know. Admission for foreigners is $20 and includes the view of the canal, a film that explains the construction of the canal shortly and the canal Museum. The entry for resident or national is free, but if they want access to the Museum and the film must cancel 5 dollars. Enter you can head to the terrace which provides a better view of the channel and sighting the entrance and exit of vessels. It is recommended not to go to the canal near noon since we arrived at 11:30 am, and already there were no boats crossing since noon change of sense; to enjoy the visit, we had to wait until 2:30 pm, time in which you were already crossing 3 boats which makes that you worthwhile since shown clearly how the boats rise or lower level across from one side to the other. The Museum is small but contains interesting explanations of the construction; the best video was music and there is also a souvenir shop.
