Panama Canal, Panama City

(4.6/5 based on 13,000+ reviews on the web)
A marvel of modern engineering, Panama Canal stretches for 77 km (48 mi) and links the Pacific with the Atlantic Ocean via the Caribbean Sea. France initiated the construction in 1888, and the United States completed it in 1914; today, it still ranks as one of the largest and most challenging projects of its kind. Over 14,000 vessels pass through the canal's three gravity-powered locks each year, avoiding the much longer route around the tip of South America. Be sure to admire the canal from both land and water--many local tour operators offer partial-transit cruises with complimentary hotel pickup and drop-off. Make Panama Canal a centerpiece of your Panama City vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Panama City trip builder.
