Trek through Volcan Baru National Park, where the active Baru volcano dominates its surroundings at a height of 3,474 m (11,400 ft). Hike the scenic Quetzal Trail, an 8 km (5 mi) trek along scenic forests and valleys, as well as the Caldero River. Wildlife here includes a range of birds, as well as pumas and leopards. Those feeling up to it can attempt the challenging climb to the summit of the volcano, where on a completely clear day you might see both the Caribbean Sea and the Pacific Ocean. We climbed Baru volcano via Paso Ancho. It is really hard but it deserved the pain :) It took 6 hours to arrive to the top (they told us that less than 8 hours is great), and 7hous and 30 minutes to g... more »

I struggle to believe many of the people reviewing here have hiked up... This is a brutal hike. It took two young fit people about five and a half hours to make the climb, starting at midnight in order to reach the top for sunrise. The roads are in a dreadful state in places, thick mud everywhere. It's all uphill, becoming incredibly steep in places, especially towards the end. The peak is basically an industrial estate for telecommunication equipment, trash everywhere. It was bitterly cold and windy and there is nowhere for the visitor to hide out of the elements. The views were spectacular (in the dark), but as sunrise broke a huge bank of fog rolled in and sat there for two hours, consequently we saw nothing. The hike back down is just as brutal on the knees and took about four hours. In essence, don't bother the hike for sunrise unless it's dry season. The weather is so bad and unpredictable in the rainy season there's a good chance you won't see anything and if you hike that's about 10 hours for nothing... Pay the money and take a tour in a 4x4, the park opens at 3am and you can make the sunrise for then easily by car. Also not sure what the entrance fee goes towards as there are zero facilities anywhere, the summit is full of trash and the roads are in a terrible state.
The hike to the peak was incredible. We saw both oceans and all of Panama! That elevation is no joke, though. Take it easy toward the top.
Best view and you can see both Oceans
The roads are in great shape if you can get Aníbal's vehicle. This transportation is the ideal to climb up to the Volcan Barú amazing service and expertise. Nature it's just breath taking. Highly recommend
Easily the best experience in Panama. Recommended to hike during the dry season. If you are staying the night at the top bring a good waterproof tent and warm clothes. Temperatures drop to 0 Celsius at night. I recommend hiking up through volcan's side (better views) and hiking down Boquete's side. Also, don't forget to hire an experienced guide if hiking up volcan's side--you will get lost if you don't know the terrain.
