The notable peaks that surround Skardu may be rugged, daunting, and otherworldly, but the imposing reputation of its most famous natural attractions belies the more fertile, diverse, and homely aspects of the town. Located in a valley at 2,438 m (7,999 ft) above sea level, the town gives good access to four of the planet's 14 "Eight-Thousanders," with trekking accounting for a large portion of Skardu tourism. Gaining its nickname because of the similarities between the local culture and the Tibetan way of life, Skardu boasts a number of cultural attractions, such as ancient forts and religious sites, as well as abundant orchards and plots growing peaches, apples, and apricots. Plan your holiday in Skardu and other destinations, from the rural, to the urban, and everything in between, using our Pakistan day trip planner.
