  • The Karakoram Highway Islamabad in the north half of Pakistan's approximately 1300 kilometers uses to connect to Kashgar in Xinjiang, i.e. China's West. He completed largely Chinese directed in 1978 and is a key trade route between the two countries, as well as a strategic alliance aimed against a dominant position in India. The KKH crosses the Western Himalaya and Karakoram on the Pakistani side by a magnificent mountain landscape. Only for a few years, formerly precariously narrow route experiences a widening. A natural reservoir, which through a huge landslide blocked the Hunza River and flooded the KKH, there still is. Through these five years broken section leads along a new road above the Lake but now since 2015. There is a passable connection between Kashgar and Taxkorgan on the plateaus of both Xinjiang for four decades. Scenic of Pakistani part of Kunjerab located up to the border at about 4600 m ü.M differs pass considerably from that in the Xinjiang. There crosses the KKH with the Western Himalayas and the Karakoram range one of the most impressive high mountain landscapes in the world and experience a highlight of special quality in the culturally as well as economically independent Hunza Valley. Beyond the Kunjerab, the highway, which is also here in some places extensively renewed up behind Taxkorgan reached a somewhat eintönigere, but still appealing plateau, before he passes the two mountain ranges of the Mustagh ATA and Kongur and leads through the Gez Canyon in the brilliant color at this point Taklamakan down. With the renewal and widening of the road on Pakistani side disappear gradually also the "Workhorses" of the KKH, which beautifully painted, some ancient Bedford, and somewhat newer Hino trucks, while large-scale modern semi-trailer trucks now that rampant are likely to win. The traditional "jewelry vices" of the KKH, which are second to none in Afghanistan, are likely to be gone so soon, so that there is another reason in addition to the scenic attractiveness as soon as possible to visit the KKH at least in its upper part. Because his special charm is lost gradually, as well as the adventure and gives way to the convenience. In the 1950s, it was considered the "dream Street in the world" Pan Americana. After its completion until now the KKH would have deserved more than this superlative. Now he runs the risk to lose such a title also gradually.

  • I traveled only on a small section of this road, which, in fact, connects Pakistan with China (length greater than 1000 km!). The small section that I've seen, done well.

Where to stay in Islamabad

Islamabad has plenty of accommodations, particularly hotels and guesthouses, to choose from. Look in Blue Area for the bulk of options. With the streets here so spread-out, wide, tree-lined, and new, the hotels tend to follow suit by being luxurious and spacious, although some exceptions can be found. Taking the form of guesthouses, budget-friendly options in town sit on the side streets, particularly around the College Road and School Road areas.
