4.5
#1 of 10 in Things to do in Nizwa
Monument Tourist Spot
A perfectly preserved example of classic Omani architecture, Nizwa Fort proudly looks out over the city and remains of the oldest of structures its kind in the country. Constructed above an underground stream in the mid-17th century, the fort is known for its monumental drum tower, soaring 30 m (98.4 ft) up into the sky and studded with lookout and firing points. Long the seat of power for the ruling imams, the fort also served as an intimidating stronghold during various conflicts. Enter past two majestic canons, then wind your way around terraces, corridors, and stairways leading to the top of the cylindrical tower, where panoramic views of the town and Hajar Mountains reward your efforts. Nizwa Fort is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Nizwa Edition.

Where to stay in Nizwa

Nizwa has relatively few accommodations to offer its guests, drawn to the historical core of the former capital. The relative lack of tourist infrastructure may well be what's keeping the traditional feel of the city center alive. A couple of standard hotels can be found in the center, and a few more in the towns to the north and south along Highway 21. The capital, Muscat, lies about an hour and a half's drive to the north-east along a good quality highway. Most visitors simply visit Nizwa during a day trip from the capital.

  • Nice and beautifully constructed place.. almost entire fort is converted into a market place. Good for shopping and buying souvenirs.. Local dessert is wonderful.
  • A must visit to know the architecture of fort in respect to comfort, utility, ventilated and safety. A very well design in concept of various floor level of different rooms. Appreciate the design point of view in those olden days architect planned and very well executed the plan of fort.
  • Excellent place to visit, with a wonderful souq nearby. History and scenic views--a great way to spend a weekend.
  • If you're passing through Nizwa you MUST visit this site, and the surrounding area. Obviously it's a bit touristy (not my fav) but the surrounding markets have very authentic wares and vendors, and the site itself is really well preserved/restored and the fort is quite fascinating. Be sure to climb the stairs up to the top edge of the inner fortress walls as the view is really awesome.
  • Very cool & large fort. Plenty to explore and you get some great panoramic shots from the top. I felt like I was in Aladdin. It's an easy two hour drive from Muscat. It's important to note that in Oman their weekend is Thursday & Friday so the fort closes at 11am on Friday's. We arrived just after 11am but they still let us in. The stores inside were closed however but this didn't really bother us as we had the place to ourselves.
