Nizwa Fort, Nizwa
Categories: Monuments, Tourist Spots
A perfectly preserved example of classic Omani architecture, Nizwa Fort proudly looks out over the city and remains of the oldest of structures its kind in the country. Constructed above an underground stream in the mid-17th century, the fort is known for its monumental drum tower, soaring 30 m (98.4 ft) up into the sky and studded with lookout and firing points. Long the seat of power for the ruling imams, the fort also served as an intimidating stronghold during various conflicts. Enter past two majestic canons, then wind your way around terraces, corridors, and stairways leading to the top of the cylindrical tower, where panoramic views of the town and Hajar Mountains reward your efforts. Nizwa Fort is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Nizwa Edition.

We loved the fort and the opportunity to take photos from the roof top. There was lots of explanations along the way so you could understand the significance of the fort. A very good restoration. If y... read more »
auch wenn's aussieht wie neu gebaut so ist dieses Bauwerk doch ein Zeichen dafür, wie man sich im Oman in früheren Jahren schützte. man kann sich darin frei bewegen und sich selbst alles anschauen. ha... read more »even if it looks like newly built so this building is but a sign, as it protected in the Oman in earlier years. Great views from the top. The museum inside has a very interesting and long poster about the history of the world divided by continents. A lot of different rooms to see, but no informative sign in any of them whatsoever.
Slap bang in the middle of town you can't fail to see this fort. It's only 500Bz in which is not even $2. It's a very cleverly designed structure with every part having a purpose. I pity any invader who tried to get in! There is an area listing the history of the fort and the area in general which is in English. I went in late May in blazing sun and had it to myself. You get good photos from the top as well. It's part of many tours or about 90 min-2 hour easy drive from Muscat. Check it out.
The largest rounded fort , Good place to visit.
Old history fort,it's good to understand about history, few visitors only
