Nizwa Fort, Nizwa

(4.5/5 based on 650+ reviews on the web)
A perfectly preserved example of classic Omani architecture, Nizwa Fort proudly looks out over the city and remains of the oldest of structures its kind in the country. Constructed above an underground stream in the mid-17th century, the fort is known for its monumental drum tower, soaring 30 m (98.4 ft) up into the sky and studded with lookout and firing points. Long the seat of power for the ruling imams, the fort also served as an intimidating stronghold during various conflicts. Enter past two majestic canons, then wind your way around terraces, corridors, and stairways leading to the top of the cylindrical tower, where panoramic views of the town and Hajar Mountains reward your efforts. Nizwa Fort is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our international travel planner, Nizwa Edition.

  • One of the most beautiful forts in Oman. If you in Nizwa you have to visit it. It has many beautiful things that show you the old life And the things they use in the past days. the prison as well in the fort and it's small room that you can't even set for 5 minutes.
  • Nizwa Fort is best castle in Oman. it attract highest number of tourist in oman compared to other castles in sultanate. it is renovated to its best possible condition and all the areas are labeled with detail information about its history.
  • Nice place to visit. Good views from the high guard tower! If you want you can make a stop at the coffee shop, it has a good selection of fresh fruit juices!
  • Slap bang in the middle of town you can't fail to see this fort. It's only 500Bz in which is not even $2. It's a very cleverly designed structure with every part having a purpose. I pity any invader who tried to get in! There is an area listing the history of the fort and the area in general which is in English. I went in late May in blazing sun and had it to myself. You get good photos from the top as well. It's part of many tours or about 90 min-2 hour easy drive from Muscat. Check it out.
  • Awesome place
