#1 of 10 in Things to do in Nizwa
A perfectly preserved example of classic Omani architecture, Nizwa Fort proudly looks out over the city and remains of the oldest of structures its kind in the country. Constructed above an underground stream in the mid-17th century, the fort is known for its monumental drum tower, soaring 30 m (98.4 ft) up into the sky and studded with lookout and firing points. Long the seat of power for the ruling imams, the fort also served as an intimidating stronghold during various conflicts. Enter past two majestic canons, then wind your way around terraces, corridors, and stairways leading to the top of the cylindrical tower, where panoramic views of the town and Hajar Mountains reward your efforts. • In addition to the goat market and the souk a nice Arabic fort. The nice thing is that there are craft demonstrations are held, with wood, cane, food and yarn. Fort is very well decorated and much is described. Guides present. Fort is different from other and partly because of this unique. Coffee bar.

  • We were pleased to learn all the historical facts on the fort and culture by visiting Nizwa Fort. Every room, space and path is worth going through and it is very interesting to read about it. However...  more »
  • The Fort itself is very interesting and worth seeing, the view from the tower is terrific, but that the ticket price was increased from 1.50 euros to 12 euros per person, is just plain naughty.

  • A must visit in Nizwa, probably better if you have a local friend to tour you around to get the deeper understanding of the fort. There‘s this really cool stairs that will bring you up to the top floor and you‘ll get the whole view of Nizwa which is really amazing. They have clean restroom, little shop and a coffee shop which was not open when I visited.
  • Nice place to visit... You can discover old Oman through it.
  • An impressive fort and elaborate example of Arab castle architecture. Impeccably restored and very well maintained. Very interesting exhibition showing not only the defensive aspects of the fort itself, but also shedding light on the local history and the traditional ways of life of castle inhabitants and the local people and their crafts. Entrance ticket 0.5 OMR. A highly recommended place to see when visiting Nizwa or just passing by.
  • The fort is interesting and well restored. It was expensive to visit, 5 OMR for foreigners and the entrance staff were not very friendly. The grounds surrounding the fort are now home to a number of souks (fish, livestock, dates, etc) but these were not all active when we visited. It may have been a bit late in the day for some of them.
  • Nizwa Fort is unique among other forts in Oman due to the cylindrical shape of its main tower which also happens to be the biggest to tower in a fort in Oman. Nizwa Fort has seven wells, a number of prisons, and prosecution ground. The main tower features many defence mechanisms Omanis used in the past such as pitfalls, honey traps, and gun shooting windows. Nizwa Fort is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Oman due to the fact that it is an amazing example of old Omani architecture that provides an illustration of the way Omani people used to live in ancient times. The fort also contains many exhibits and artefacts displayed in each of the rooms of the fort. There is also a nice gift shop and a permanent exhibition that illustrates the geographical history of Oman and many details about the history of Nizwa and how it used to be the capital of Oman at some point in time.

Where to stay in Nizwa

Nizwa has relatively few accommodations to offer its guests, drawn to the historical core of the former capital. The relative lack of tourist infrastructure may well be what's keeping the traditional feel of the city center alive. A couple of standard hotels can be found in the center, and a few more in the towns to the north and south along Highway 21. The capital, Muscat, lies about an hour and a half's drive to the north-east along a good quality highway. Most visitors simply visit Nizwa during a day trip from the capital.
