Nakhal Fort, Nakhl

#1 of 16 in Things to do in Al Batinah Governorate
Surrounded by palm trees, Nakhal Fort offers insight into the history of the region and scenic views of the plain and the town. Named after an ancient province, the site dates back to pre-Islamic times, and the 17th-century stronghold was built to protect important trading routes. The gateway and the round towers were added in the mid-19th century, and the area underwent complete renovation in 1990. See traditional furnishings and handicrafts in the rooms, as well as a collection of historical guns at the museum. The indoor seating area at the top--with oriental rugs and colorful cushions lined against the wall--offers a quiet break from the sun. You will need to climb many stairs to tour the fort. • This Fort is a long way from Muscat but, in my opinion, it deserves a stop. My guide was really good at explaining the history of the Fort, and it is very nice the view from the towers (despite the great heat!). From here, in fact, you can admire the town, vast palm groves, and the surrounding mountain ranges.

  • For us it was the last fort of the tour and maybe others are even more impressive! The view is still very nice.

  • The fort offers a good impression of the construction and structure. You can put yourself in the back of the day. The view over the oasis of the valley and the surrounding mountains is particularly great. Certainly a little meager for castle fans, but you know one, you know all.

  • It's a nice fort. The view is good. I like it coz you can go inside when it's blistering hot outside as the Fort is really cool inside. The rooms are well decorated and informative. One suggestion would be that more English content could be added for the non Arabic speakers. The entry fee is a nominal amount too.
  • Outstanding and in incredible condition. Just got to be done. There is so much to see and the views are amazing. The atmosphere is amazing it's like stepping back many centuries.
  • Beautiful place. Quiet place. Great views up there.
  • It’s very good fort to visit in muscat , entry fee 0.5 Riyal
