Trollstigen (Troll's Footpath), Western Norway
(4.8/5 based on 460+ reviews on the web)
Drive up Trollstigen (Troll's Footpath), a scenic serpentine mountain road through the alpine landscape of a protected area, parts of which belong to a national park. The narrow road with 11 sharp bends climbs up to a 700 m (2,300 ft) plateau with panoramic viewing balconies. Leave your car in the parking lot here and walk out to the platform to view the winding road and two waterfalls. King Haakon VII opened the road in 1936 after eight years of construction. A modern tourist facility with restrooms, a gift shop, and a museum was completed in 2012. • Here can be reached by public transport. I think that here it is necessary to spend all day-go to the observation deck, waterfall, walk in the mountains. There is a toilet, cafes, souvenir shops.

  • This serpentine mountain road has a steep incline and eleven hairpin bends up a steep mountainside. There are several viewing balconies overlooking the bends and the Stigfossen waterfall. Trollstigen ...  more »
  • We have walked this stretch of road starting at the top. Before embarking on the route we had to stop due to fog (visibility 0) along with other hundreds of cars, caravans and buses hopeful that within just the fog lifted a little. Meanwhile the police had blocked both the descent that the climb! We decided to have lunch there! After waiting a couple of hours the police cleared the road though the visibility was not improved. We walked the street at walking pace, only saw a gray wall and nearing the end ... we had to stop because because traffic and road too narrow a bus did not have enough room to do the curve!! Meanwhile the police had disappeared. What a disappointment!

  • One of the top 5 of best roads in Europe. Awesome viewpoints and great if you love driving. Not suited for motorhomes or caravans. Only nice when it's a clear day, preferably may-july. In early summer, the summit offers quiet drives through walls of snow. Awesome!!!
  • Stigfossen is a tremendous impressive waterfall at the most famous road in Norway: Trollstigen. Trollstigen is a road with many sharp curves and an elevation of approximately 850 meter. At the top of Trollstigen there is a viewing platform, Trollstigheim called, where you have a beautiful view on the road and the waterfalls Stigfossen and Trollfossen. The Stigfossen is the most powerful waterfall of the two and the most photogenic. When driving to the base of the fall you will have a good view up with an old bridge going over the fall. Especially in a period of heavy rainfall or extremely melting of snow the waterfall appears to be a great waterfall. The river Istra drops down over 250 meters and is fed by many lakes and two small glaciers.
  • Nice view and the Trollstigen is fun to see and drive. But there are some much more fun and stunning drives in Norway.
  • Everything here is awesome. The road, the view, service and also these scary goats you can meet at the parking lot.
  • Extremely adventure for driving. One of the top roads to test your Epinephrine. Don't miss the experience
