Trollstigen (Troll's Footpath), Western Norway

4.5
#2 of 10 in Scenic Drive in Norway
Scenic Drive Outdoor Activity
Drive up Trollstigen (Troll's Footpath), a scenic serpentine mountain road through the alpine landscape of a protected area, parts of which belong to a national park. The narrow road with 11 sharp bends climbs up to a 700 m (2,300 ft) plateau with panoramic viewing balconies. Leave your car in the parking lot here and walk out to the platform to view the winding road and two waterfalls. King Haakon VII opened the road in 1936 after eight years of construction. A modern tourist facility with restrooms, a gift shop, and a museum was completed in 2012. • Probably, this place is the business card of Norway. Clearly we need to visit and see everything with your own eyes. Pictures and videos do not convey all the beauty and grandeur of this place. Go early, before the arrival of tourist buses. Or after dinner. Lunch in the area run the risk of a long search for a parking place.

  • Was here 25 years ago at age 12, and drove an hour detour in the summer to get with us this spectacular way. Was no less impressed now, and in addition, it is made a fantastic Center with walkways and a spektatkulært prospect that hangs over the cliffs. This has in addition grids as a floor so one get an experience of how high a hanging above the ground. Nothing but the spectacular scenery, ingengiørkunst (the road) and great architecture on the new Center!

  • Meandering zig zag roads up the mountain wall (not for the height rescue) and nice vantage point with refreshments, gift shop and toilets on the top. Have to have nerves and good tyres on the car. Don't go in the rain (content) or in the fog (no view).

  • Nice place to stop before starting climbing/ridind the trollstigen road, coming from Andalsnes to Geiringar.
  • Great view, but don't come for the food/drinks.
  • Modern, clean, friendly staff
  • Nice views
  • Very interesting architecture building. Good for a quick snack. There is a hidden roof garden where you can eat and get a great view. Walk to the back of the cafe on the right side
