Old Town Bridge, Trondheim

4.1
#2 of 51 in Things to do in Trondheim
Old Town Bridge links the city center with the colorful neighborhood of Bakklandet, filled with cozy cafes and exclusive boutiques. Although originally constructed in 1681, the current bridge reflects numerous alterations. The last adjustment included replacement of the wooden foundations with a solid concrete structure. Notice the ornamented red portals that allow the bridge to still be lifted. Urban legend says that a Norwegian composer and a member of the resistance movement Oskar Hoddø composed a waltz from this bridge one night in April 1940. The bridge was thus nicknamed the Gate of Happiness after the popular waltz. A nice old historical bridge with good canal views. Not far from the cathedral or the centre of town so worth a detour to take a quick look.  more »

The Gamle Bybro is a must if you are in Trondheim, a town very pleasant and I enjoyed during the two day visit. Not being a big city, the part of the ' old town ' is doable on foot and leaving the Nidaros Cathedral Park via flows naturally in the bridge over the river Nidelva, once turned the corner. The name means, precisely, ' old town bridge and is a colorful wooden frame, through which you access the city's historic district, the area full of Bakklandet, shops and cafes, which began to arise soon 1600/grow over the historic city reached its limits of growth. the bridge is the best view point to admire the Bryggen, the wharves studded with wooden houses in a variety of colors, really superb, some restored, others are not (the ones on the right bank there seem better maintained or repainted recently). From the bridge you can see beyond the Bryggen to open the sea on the horizon. We are lucky to see this place is in a nice sunny and blue skies, with colors that, around sunset, light up gradually, but even on a gloomy day and a little rainy and it is a beautiful watch again with perfectly mirrored houses on the river ... Inevitable a selfie from the bridge ^_^.

Where to stay in Trondheim

One of Norway’s major cities, Trondheim offers a wide range of accommodations. As with any Norwegian city, it’s easy to find the high-end hotels with big price tags in the city’s historical center. With a student population of roughly 25,000, the town also caters to more budget-conscious travelers with a fair number of options. Look for reasonably priced hostels near the university. If you’re not opposed to roughing it the way Norwegians love to, check out one of the many campsites in the city’s outskirts. You'll still have access to the city thanks to the local buses that run regularly.
