Nidarosdomen, Trondheim

4.3
Home of the grave of Norway's patron saint, Nidarosdomen stands as one of the country's most important religious sites and one of the largest medieval buildings in Scandinavia. Original construction started in 1070 over the resting place of Saint Olaf, and the church took on elements of both Gothic and Romanesque architecture over the centuries. Stop by the sizable cathedral to admire its dual bell towers and intricate facade, replete with arches, windows, and pillars. Explore the vaulted interior and its large stained-glass window section. Don't miss the crypt, which contains a multitude of medieval-era headstones found within the church. Fascinating history in this old cathedral - has had many reincarnations and still plays an important part in Norwegian culture. A combined ticket purchased from the centre beside the church will also ...  more »

We got a combination ticket for the cathedral and the museum. We took the first English tour of the day which offered a good deal of information. They don't allow pictures which I don't understand why...  more »

This gothic cathedral is probably the most famous tourist attraction in Trondheim, and a must see. There's no ticket charge if you don't want a guided tour (though I would highly recommend it). The artistic architectural style, handcrafted ornaments sculptures and mosaic makes this on of the most photogenic buildings in Norway.

You buy tickets to enter the churches here, there's also a pretty pricy cafe

Gothic church. Flagship must see Trondheim. Fyi. A angel on the left high up statues face is modeled after Bob Dylan. Neat huh?

Where to stay in Trondheim

One of Norway’s major cities, Trondheim offers a wide range of accommodations. As with any Norwegian city, it’s easy to find the high-end hotels with big price tags in the city’s historical center. With a student population of roughly 25,000, the town also caters to more budget-conscious travelers with a fair number of options. Look for reasonably priced hostels near the university. If you’re not opposed to roughing it the way Norwegians love to, check out one of the many campsites in the city’s outskirts. You'll still have access to the city thanks to the local buses that run regularly.
