Tromsø Museum – Universitetsmuseet, Tromso

4.0
#3 of 17 in Museums in Tromso
At Tromsø Museum – Universitetsmuseet, discover the archeology, geology, and zoology of the region. The site also reveals church art and the traditional and modern life of Sami, an indigenous Finno-Ugric people. The well-displayed and informative exhibits educate visitors about the consequences of global warming and the role of fire. Check out the replica of a "terrella" or "northern lights machine"--an early invention which creates the sense of the aurora borealis on a miniature scale. Look for the traditional Sami sod house in the garden, and stop by the gift shop for a selection of books about the aurora borealis. The museum also houses a small display on the Vikings. • We went here as stopping by 1 day in Tromso off peak season - no midnight sun, no northern lights. This museum is a good way to spend 1-2 hours to get a mix of light information on nature, Sami and no...  more »
  • Gone on the same day as the polar Museum, so a little wearing. Which is same and the difference is it difficult. Urban buses is recommended because it leaves a little more.

  • Ticket for both museums costs about 8 euros, and worth a combined ticket because it complemetan. It is a little away from the Center and shows natural history on the ground floor and Ethnology Sami in the above. The Polar Museum focuses on expeditions. The two museums are interesting and serve as an introduction to the area. A good way to take advantage of a few hours in the city.

  • Nice and entertaining museum. Very friendly staff and nice souvenir. The Sami exhibition is specially interesting. A bit more on thr vikings would be nice.
  • A good place to visit if you want to get to know the history of the area. I wish there would be more about the Vikings but otherwise they have a good amount of information on the Sami as well as a decent area about animal life in the North as well as a section about church history. The geological section is getting a makeover which brings down the rating a bit.
  • Amazing museum of Natural History of the north, Nordic and Sami Culture!
  • Very good guide! Interesting culture.
