Tromsø Museum, Tromso

Specialty Museum Museum
At Tromsø Museum, discover the archeology, geology, and zoology of the region. The site also reveals church art and the traditional and modern life of Sami, an indigenous Finno-Ugric people. The well-displayed and informative exhibits educate visitors about the consequences of global warming and the role of fire. Check out the replica of a "terrella" or "northern lights machine"--an early invention which creates the sense of the aurora borealis on a miniature scale. Look for the traditional Sami sod house in the garden, and stop by the gift shop for a selection of books about the aurora borealis. The museum also houses a small display on the Vikings. For travelers who use our custom trip planner, Tromso holidays become easier to arrange, with trips to the Tromsø Museum and other attractions mapped out and timetabled.

  • Interesting exhibition about the Same culture, but clearly several decades old and quite worn. Deserves a thorough brush-up.  more »
  • When we got there, on a rainy day (yes rain, not snow, April can be cruel) the place was deserted. We took a bus from the centre of Tromso and it took a while to get there (it was quite far on foot) a...  more »

  • A good place to visit if you want to get to know the history of the area. I wish there would be more about the Vikings but otherwise they have a good amount of information on the Sami as well as a decent area about animal life in the North as well as a section about church history. The geological section is getting a makeover which brings down the rating a bit.
  • Very good museum. Must be in the priority list.
  • There is a section about sami people wifi
  • Do not forget to walk past the building towards the sea to see the breathtaking view of snow clad Tromso.
